Clean cloth or gloves
Parts
- Tail light bulb × 1 — Check owner's manual for bulb type (typically 921 or 7443)
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
- Open trunk and locate the tail light assembly access panel on the affected side
- Identify which bulb needs replacement (brake, turn signal, reverse, or tail light)
Procedure
- 1Remove trunk trim panelLocate the fabric or carpet trunk liner covering the back of the tail light assembly. Gently pull back or remove any push clips or fasteners securing the access panel. On the Camry, this is typically a small removable section of trunk liner directly behind the tail light.
- 2Access bulb socketIdentify the correct bulb socket behind the tail light assembly. The socket will have wiring harness connected to it. Note the position and type of bulb needed based on which socket corresponds to the failed bulb (brake, turn signal, tail, or reverse).
- 3Remove bulb socketGrasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (usually 45-90 degrees) until it releases from the tail light housing. Pull the socket straight out with the bulb still installed.
- 4Remove failed bulbDepending on bulb type, either pull the bulb straight out of the socket (wedge-type bulbs) or press in slightly and rotate counterclockwise to release (bayonet-type bulbs). Inspect the bulb socket for any corrosion or damage.
- 5Install new bulbUsing a clean cloth or gloves to avoid touching the glass, insert the new bulb into the socket. For wedge bulbs, push straight in until fully seated. For bayonet bulbs, align the pins, insert, and rotate clockwise until it locks. Ensure bulb is secure in socket.
- 6Reinstall bulb socketInsert the bulb socket back into the tail light housing, align the tabs, and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks securely into place. Gently tug on the socket to verify it is properly seated.
- 7Test bulb operationBefore reinstalling the trunk liner, turn on the ignition and test the new bulb. Have an assistant press the brake pedal, activate turn signals, or turn on headlights as needed to verify the correct bulb is functioning properly.
- 8Reinstall trunk trimReplace the trunk liner access panel and secure any push clips or fasteners. Ensure the liner is properly seated and does not interfere with trunk operation.
Reassembly
- Ensure all trunk trim panels are securely fastened and properly aligned
- Close trunk and verify all tail lights function correctly from outside the vehicle
Verification
- Turn on headlights and verify tail lights illuminate
- Press brake pedal and confirm brake lights activate
- Test turn signals in both directions
- Check reverse lights by shifting into reverse (with engine running)
- Walk around vehicle to visually confirm all tail light functions are working properly
