This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the input speed sensor on the 8-speed automatic transmission of a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Ensure transmission fluid is not excessively hot before beginning work. Allow vehicle to cool for at least 30 minutes after driving.
The input speed sensor is located on the transmission case and some fluid will drain when removed. Have a catch pan ready.
ℹ️Do not start the vehicle with the speed sensor removed or disconnected. This will set diagnostic codes and illuminate the check engine light.

Parts

  • Input Speed Sensor (Turbine Speed Sensor) × 1 — OEM Toyota part or equivalent
  • Speed Sensor O-ring × 1 — Usually included with sensor

Fluids

  • Toyota WS ATF — 0.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Raise and support vehicle safely on lift or jack stands with adequate working clearance underneath
  3. Ensure engine and transmission are cool enough to work on safely
  4. Locate the input speed sensor on the driver's side of the transmission case, near the bellhousing area
  5. Prepare catch pan and have new sensor and o-ring ready

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the transmission underside
Position yourself under the vehicle with clear access to the driver's side of the transmission. The input speed sensor is mounted on the transmission case approximately midway along the length, accessible from below. Clean the area around the sensor with a shop towel to prevent debris from entering the transmission.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the input speed sensor. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight off the sensor. Do not twist or pull on the wiring itself. Move the connector aside to provide clearance for sensor removal.
  3. 3
    Position fluid catch pan
Place a fluid catch pan directly beneath the speed sensor location. Expect approximately 100-200ml of transmission fluid to drain when the sensor is removed. Keep shop towels handy to manage any spillage.
  4. 4
    Remove the sensor mounting bolt
Using a 10mm socket with extension, remove the single bolt securing the input speed sensor to the transmission case. The bolt may have thread sealant applied. Store the bolt in a clean location as it will be reused unless damaged.

    Sensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Extract the speed sensor
Carefully pull the input speed sensor straight out of the transmission case. Do not twist or rock the sensor excessively as this may damage the bore. Fluid will drain from the opening. Once removed, quickly position the new sensor nearby for installation. Inspect the old sensor for metal debris on the magnetic tip, which may indicate internal transmission wear.
  6. 6
    Prepare the new sensor
Inspect the new input speed sensor and verify it includes a new o-ring. If the o-ring is not pre-installed, lubricate it lightly with clean Toyota WS ATF and install it in the groove on the sensor body. Do not use petroleum-based lubricants. Ensure the o-ring is properly seated without twists or damage.
  7. 7
    Install the new sensor
Carefully insert the new input speed sensor into the transmission case bore, ensuring proper alignment. Push firmly until the sensor is fully seated against the transmission case. The mounting hole should align with the threaded hole in the case. Do not force the sensor if resistance is felt.
  8. 8
Install and torque the mounting bolt
Thread the mounting bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to specification. Ensure the sensor body does not rotate during tightening.

  9. 9
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the pins on the new input speed sensor. Push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely latched. Ensure the wiring harness is routed away from hot exhaust components and sharp edges.
  10. 10
    Check and refill transmission fluid
Lower the vehicle to ground level. With the engine off, remove the transmission dipstick (if equipped) or access the fill plug. Add approximately 0.5 quarts of Toyota WS ATF to replace the fluid lost during sensor removal. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature while cycling through all gear positions. Recheck fluid level with engine running and adjust as necessary to bring level to the HOT range.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
  2. Verify no tools or materials were left in the work area
  3. Dispose of used transmission fluid according to local regulations

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify no transmission fluid leaks around the speed sensor installation
  • Using an OBD-II scanner, clear any stored diagnostic codes and verify no new codes are present
  • Test drive the vehicle and confirm smooth shifting through all gears
  • Verify the speedometer and tachometer function correctly
  • Check transmission fluid level again after test drive and confirm level is correct when hot
  • Monitor for check engine light or transmission warning lights on the instrument cluster
