This procedure replaces the trunk lid actuator (power trunk release motor) on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry, restoring automatic trunk opening functionality.
Warnings
⚠The trunk lid is heavy and can close suddenly if the actuator is removed without support. Ensure the trunk is fully open and stable before beginning work.
⚠Disconnecting the battery will reset radio presets and may require window re-initialization after reconnection.
ℹ️This procedure requires working inside the trunk lid panel. Take care not to damage surrounding trim or wiring harnesses.

Parts
- Trunk lid actuator assembly × 1 — Toyota OEM 64650-06010 or equivalent
- Trunk panel clips (if damaged during removal) × 5 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to allow system capacitors to discharge
- Open trunk lid fully and prop open securely
- Gather all tools and new actuator assembly
- Verify new actuator matches existing part number and connector type
Procedure
- 1Remove trunk lid interior trim panelFrom inside the trunk, locate the interior trim panel on the underside of the trunk lid. Remove the plastic push clips (typically 6-8 clips) using a trim removal tool. Start at one corner and work around the perimeter. Gently pull the panel down to release it from the trunk lid structure. Disconnect any courtesy light connectors if present.
- 2Locate and access trunk actuatorWith the trim panel removed, locate the trunk actuator assembly near the center of the trunk lid, attached to the latch mechanism. You will see the actuator motor connected to a linkage rod that operates the latch release. Note the orientation and position of the linkage connection before removal.
- 3Disconnect actuator electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the actuator. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull the connector away from the actuator. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If the connector is difficult to access, you may need to disconnect it after removing the mounting bolts.
- 4Disconnect actuator linkage rodThe actuator has a plastic or metal linkage rod connecting it to the trunk latch mechanism. Identify the connection point (typically a ball-and-socket or clip-style connection). Use a flathead screwdriver if needed to gently pry the linkage rod off the actuator arm. Note the exact position and orientation for reinstallation.
- 5Remove actuator mounting boltsRemove the 2-3 mounting bolts securing the actuator to the trunk lid bracket using a 10mm socket. Support the actuator with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Remove the old actuator assembly from the trunk lid.
- 6Install new trunk actuatorPosition the new actuator in the same orientation as the old unit. Start all mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten the mounting bolts evenly to secure the actuator to the bracket. Ensure the actuator sits flush against the mounting surface.
- 7Reconnect linkage rodReconnect the linkage rod to the new actuator arm, ensuring it snaps or clips securely into place. Verify the connection is firm by gently tugging on the linkage. The rod should not come loose with normal force. Check that the linkage moves freely without binding.
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPlug the electrical connector back into the new actuator until you hear or feel a distinct click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place. Ensure no wires are pinched or routed where they could interfere with moving parts.
- 9Reinstall trunk lid trim panelReconnect any courtesy light connectors if present. Align the trim panel with the mounting points on the trunk lid. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat all push clips. Verify the panel is flush and secure with no gaps.
- 10Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are properly seated and all clips are engaged
- Verify no tools or parts were left inside the trunk lid assembly
- Check that all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
Verification
- With the trunk closed, press the trunk release button on the key fob to verify the actuator operates and the trunk opens automatically
- Test the trunk release button inside the vehicle cabin to confirm proper operation
- Test the emergency trunk release handle from inside the trunk to ensure latch operation is not affected
- Verify the trunk closes and latches properly without unusual noises or resistance
- Check that the actuator operates smoothly without grinding or clicking sounds
- Re-initialize power windows if necessary by fully lowering and raising each window
