Parts
- Front window regulator and motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM Toyota part number for specific door side
- Door panel retaining clips × 1 — Replace any broken clips during removal
- Vapor barrier adhesive tape × 1 — If original adhesive is damaged
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds
- Roll window to approximately 1/3 down position before disconnecting battery if motor is functional
- Prepare clean workspace for door panel storage to avoid scratching trim surfaces
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel fastenersRemove Phillips screw from door pull handle recess. Remove Phillips screw from behind door release lever cover (pry cover gently with trim tool). Remove the 10mm bolt from lower rear corner of door panel near speaker grille.
- 2Disconnect power window switch assemblyUse trim tool to carefully pry up the power window switch bezel from the front edge. Lift the switch assembly and disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab. Set assembly aside safely.
- 3Remove door panelStarting from the bottom rear corner, use trim removal tool to release the door panel retaining clips by pulling outward firmly. Work around the perimeter, releasing all clips. Lift door panel upward to disengage from window sill, then pull away from door frame. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors for courtesy lights or speakers.⚠Door panel clips break easily - pull panel outward perpendicular to door surface, not at an angle.
- 4Remove vapor barrierCarefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier from the door frame to access the window regulator mechanism. Start from one corner and work slowly to avoid tearing. The barrier may have butyl adhesive; warm with hands if needed to soften adhesive for easier removal.
- 5Secure window glassManually raise the window glass to the fully up position. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame at the top, or have an assistant hold the glass. This prevents the glass from dropping when the regulator is disconnected.
- 6Disconnect window motor electrical connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Route the connector away from the work area.
- 7Disconnect glass from regulatorLocate the two 10mm bolts that secure the window glass channel to the regulator lift mechanism (visible through access holes in door frame). Remove both bolts and carefully separate the glass from the regulator arms. Ensure glass remains secured in the up position.
- 8Remove regulator mounting boltsRemove all regulator mounting bolts from the door frame. There are typically 6-8 mounting bolts of 10mm size securing the regulator assembly and motor bracket to the door. Track bolt locations as some may be different lengths.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Extract regulator assemblyCarefully maneuver the regulator assembly out through the large access opening in the door frame. The assembly may need to be tilted and rotated to clear the door structure. Work slowly to avoid catching cables or arms on internal door components.
- 10Install new regulator assemblyInsert the new regulator assembly through the door access opening, maneuvering it into position. Align all mounting bolt holes with the door frame. Start all mounting bolts by hand before tightening any. Torque all mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect glass to regulatorLower the window glass onto the regulator lift mechanism, aligning the mounting holes. Install and hand-tighten the two 10mm bolts that secure the glass channel to the regulator arms. Ensure proper alignment before final tightening.
- 12Connect motor and test operationReconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery terminal. Before reinstalling door panel, test window operation through full up and down cycles multiple times. Verify smooth operation without binding, unusual noises, or misalignment. Disconnect battery again before continuing.⚠Keep hands clear of window and regulator mechanism during test operation.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reattach vapor barrier to door frame, ensuring complete seal around perimeter. Replace adhesive tape if original is damaged.
- Align door panel with window sill channel and lower onto door frame. Press firmly around perimeter to seat all retaining clips until they click.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors including window switch assembly, courtesy lights, and speakers.
- Install door panel fasteners including handle screw, door release cover screw, and lower corner bolt.
- Reconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification using Battery Terminal Bolts spec.
- Perform complete window calibration by rolling window fully down, then fully up and holding switch for 2 seconds to reset auto-up function.
Verification
- Test window operation through multiple complete cycles, verifying smooth travel with no binding or unusual noises.
- Verify auto-up and auto-down functions work correctly if equipped.
- Check that window seals properly against weatherstripping when fully closed.
- Confirm all door panel clips are properly seated and panel does not rattle.
- Test all door panel switches and functions to ensure proper reconnection.
- Verify window stops at correct positions at full up and full down without overtravel.
