This procedure replaces the clock spring (spiral cable) assembly in the steering column, which maintains electrical connection to the airbag and steering wheel controls while allowing the wheel to rotate.

Warnings

⚠️Airbag system must be fully deactivated before beginning work. Failure to wait 90 seconds after battery disconnect can result in airbag deployment and serious injury.
⚠️Never rotate the clock spring freely without it being installed on the steering column. This will break the internal ribbon cable and destroy the new part.
The steering wheel must be centered and the front wheels straight before removing the clock spring. Misalignment will cause premature failure.
Use only the specified torque values for airbag components. Over-torquing can damage sensors and cause deployment issues.

Parts

  • Clock spring assembly × 1 — 84306-02200 or equivalent OEM

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground with front wheels pointed straight ahead
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 90 seconds for airbag system capacitor discharge
  4. Disconnect positive battery terminal to prevent accidental reconnection
  5. Turn steering wheel to confirm it is centered with wheels straight
  6. Mark the steering wheel position relative to the steering column with masking tape for alignment reference

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove driver airbag module
Locate the two Torx screws on the back side of the steering wheel (accessible from rear). Remove both screws and carefully pull the airbag module straight toward you. Disconnect the airbag connector and horn connector from the back of the module. Place airbag module face-up in a safe location away from work area.

  2. 2
    Disconnect steering wheel controls
Locate and disconnect all electrical connectors behind the steering wheel, including cruise control switches and any audio controls. Note the routing and position of wiring harnesses for reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Remove steering wheel retaining nut
Using a socket, remove the large center nut securing the steering wheel to the column shaft. Mark the steering wheel position relative to the shaft with masking tape or paint marker if not already marked. Do not turn the steering shaft from this point forward.

  4. 4
    Remove steering wheel
While pulling firmly toward you on both sides of the steering wheel, work it off the splined shaft. If stuck, use a proper steering wheel puller - never strike the wheel or column. Once removed, secure the steering column shaft with tape so it cannot rotate.
  5. 5
    Remove steering column covers
Remove the screws securing the upper and lower steering column covers. Release any plastic clips using trim removal tools and carefully separate the covers. Note the location of all clips and fasteners for reassembly.

  6. 6
Mark and photograph clock spring position
Before removing anything, mark the alignment position of the clock spring housing relative to the steering column. Take a clear photograph showing the alignment marks on the clock spring (yellow alignment tab or marks). This is critical for proper installation.
  7. 7
    Disconnect clock spring electrical connectors
Locate and carefully disconnect all electrical connectors from the clock spring assembly. Most Corollas have two main connectors - one for the airbag circuit and one for steering wheel controls. Release any wire harness clips securing wiring to the column.
  8. 8
    Remove clock spring assembly
Remove the screws securing the clock spring to the steering column. Carefully note the exact position of alignment marks before removal. Slide the clock spring assembly off the steering column shaft. Do not allow the steering shaft to rotate during this process.

  9. 9
    Prepare new clock spring
Remove new clock spring from packaging. Verify the yellow alignment tab or pin is locked in the centered position. If the clock spring is not locked or pre-centered, rotate the inner rotor fully in one direction until it stops (do not force), then rotate back approximately 2.5-3 full turns until the alignment marks line up and install the locking pin. Do not rotate beyond this point.
  10. 10
    Install new clock spring
With the steering column shaft still secured in center position, slide the new clock spring onto the column shaft, aligning it with the marks made during removal. Install and hand-tighten the mounting screws, then torque to specification in a crossing pattern.

  11. 11
    Connect electrical connectors
Reconnect all electrical connectors to the new clock spring assembly, ensuring they click fully into place. Route wiring harnesses as originally positioned and secure with any clips. Verify connectors are fully seated by gently tugging on each connector.
  12. 12
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the lower and upper steering column covers, ensuring all tabs and clips align properly. Install all screws and torque to specification. Verify covers are secure and properly seated.

  13. 13
    Reinstall steering wheel
Remove the locking pin or tab from the new clock spring. Align the steering wheel to the marks made during removal and slide it onto the splined shaft. Install the steering wheel nut and torque to specification. Verify steering wheel is centered with wheels still straight ahead.
    Torque spec
    Steering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
  14. 14
Reconnect steering wheel controls and airbag
Reconnect all steering wheel control connectors and horn connector. Position the airbag module onto the steering wheel, connect both connectors, and secure with the Torx screws. Torque airbag module bolts to specification in a crossing pattern.
    Torque spec
    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  15. 15
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect positive battery terminal first, then negative terminal. Do not start the vehicle yet. Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify the airbag warning light illuminates then extinguishes after approximately 6 seconds. If light stays on or flashes, recheck all connections before proceeding.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify steering wheel is properly centered with front wheels straight
  3. Confirm airbag warning light performs normal self-test cycle
  4. Test all steering wheel controls including horn, cruise control, and audio functions

Verification

  • Start engine and verify airbag warning light extinguishes after 6 seconds
  • Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary - it should rotate smoothly approximately 2.5 turns in each direction without binding
  • Test horn operation
  • Test all steering wheel mounted controls (cruise control, audio, phone buttons)
  • Drive vehicle in safe area and verify no airbag warning light illumination during turning
  • If airbag light remains on or flashes, use a scan tool to check for codes - common issues are connector problems or improper clock spring centering
