This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the combination switch (turn signal/wiper/headlight stalk assembly) on the steering column of a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds before working near the steering column to allow the airbag system to fully discharge.
⚠Do not rotate the steering wheel with the combination switch disconnected or you may damage the spiral cable (clockspring) in the airbag system.
⚠Avoid touching the airbag connector terminals or shorting them together, as this can damage sensitive airbag components.
ℹ️The steering wheel does not need to be removed for this procedure, but the column covers must be removed.

Parts
- Combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure away from battery post
- Wait minimum 90 seconds for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Adjust steering column to lowest tilt position for easier access
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate the screws securing the lower steering column cover (typically 2-3 Phillips screws on the underside). Remove these screws and carefully pull the lower cover away from the column. Set aside with screws.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the upper cover mounting screws (usually 2 screws accessible from below). Remove these screws, then carefully separate the upper cover from the column by releasing any remaining clips. Lift the upper cover up and over the steering wheel and set aside.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 3Identify combination switch connectorsLocate the combination switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. Identify the two main electrical connectors: one larger connector for the turn signal/headlight functions and one smaller connector for the wiper functions. Note their orientation or mark with tape for reassembly.ℹ️Taking a photo of the connector positions before disconnection can help during reassembly.
- 4Disconnect combination switch electrical connectorsPress the locking tab on each connector while carefully pulling the connector away from the switch. The larger connector typically has a slide-lock that must be pushed before the tab will release. Disconnect both connectors and route the wiring harness clear of the work area.⚠Do not force connectors - ensure locking tabs are fully released before pulling.
- 5Remove combination switch mounting screwsLocate the two mounting screws that secure the combination switch body to the steering column (typically on the left side and bottom of the switch housing). Remove both screws completely using a Phillips screwdriver. Keep screws in a safe location.
- 6Remove combination switch assemblyWith mounting screws removed, carefully slide the combination switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have a small alignment tab that must clear the column housing. Once free, remove the switch completely from the vehicle.⚠Handle the switch carefully to avoid damaging the electrical contacts or stalks.
- 7Install new combination switch assemblyPosition the new combination switch assembly near the steering column, aligning the mounting tabs with the slots in the column housing. Slide the switch onto the column, ensuring the alignment tab engages properly and the switch sits flush against the column bracket.ℹ️Verify the steering wheel is still in the straight-ahead position before proceeding.
- 8Install combination switch mounting screwsInsert both mounting screws through the switch body into the column bracket. Thread screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Tighten screws gradually in an alternating pattern to ensure even seating of the switch assembly. Do not overtighten as the housing is plastic.
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorsRoute the wiring harness back to the switch assembly. Connect the larger turn signal/headlight connector first, ensuring it clicks into place and the slide-lock engages. Then connect the smaller wiper connector, verifying the locking tab clicks. Gently tug on each connector to confirm secure connection.ℹ️Ensure connectors are oriented correctly and not forced at an angle during connection.
- 10Reinstall upper steering column coverPosition the upper steering column cover over the steering wheel and align it with the lower cover mounting points. Press down gently to engage any retaining clips. Install the mounting screws and tighten to specification.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall lower steering column coverAlign the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column assembly. Ensure all tabs and clips engage properly. Install the mounting screws and tighten to specification. Verify both covers are secure and aligned properly with no gaps.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and initialize systemsReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Once connected, turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Verify that no airbag warning lights remain illuminated on the dashboard. The airbag light should illuminate briefly during self-test then extinguish.⚠If the airbag warning light remains on after initial self-test, do not operate the vehicle - the system requires professional diagnosis.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify steering column covers are properly aligned with no gaps or rattles
- Check that all mounting screws are tightened to proper specification
- Confirm battery terminal is secure and properly tightened
Verification
- With ignition ON, test turn signal function in both left and right positions - verify indicators flash on dashboard
- Test headlight switch through all positions: off, parking lights, low beams, high beams
- Test windshield wiper switch through all speed settings and intermittent positions
- Test windshield washer function
- Verify hazard light function operates correctly
- Confirm all dashboard indicator lights for these functions illuminate appropriately
- Check that airbag warning light extinguishes after initial self-test (approximately 6-8 seconds)
- Test all functions while gently moving the steering wheel to ensure no intermittent operation
