This procedure replaces the ignition switch assembly on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla, involving removal of steering column covers and electrical disconnection.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 90 seconds before starting work to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
Do not turn the steering wheel after disconnecting the ignition switch as this may damage the airbag clock spring
Keep the ignition key with you during the procedure to prevent accidental locking of the steering column
ℹ️This procedure requires proper programming and key registration after installation; verify you have access to necessary programming equipment or dealership support

Parts

  • Ignition switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to ACC position, then back to LOCK position and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds minimum
  4. Set steering wheel to straight-ahead position
  5. Lower steering column to lowest position for access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column cover
Locate and remove the screws securing the lower steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws on underside). Gently pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Set cover aside in a safe location.

    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
Remove the screws securing the upper steering column cover. Carefully separate the upper cover from the lower portion, working around the ignition cylinder area. You may need to manipulate the cover slightly to clear the key cylinder. Remove cover completely.

    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector
Locate the main ignition switch electrical connector on the right side of the steering column. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out from the switch body. If present, disconnect any additional smaller connectors for key illumination or accessory circuits.
Do not pull on wires; always grasp the connector body to prevent wire damage
  4. 4
    Remove ignition switch mounting hardware
Locate the ignition switch mounting screws (typically 2 screws) securing the switch assembly to the steering column lock housing. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove these screws completely. Keep screws organized for reassembly.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove ignition switch assembly
With mounting screws removed, carefully slide the ignition switch assembly away from the lock cylinder housing. The switch may have a locating tab that requires slight upward or downward pressure while pulling. Remove the switch completely from the steering column.
ℹ️Note the orientation of the switch and position of any alignment pins for correct installation of new switch
  6. 6
    Prepare new ignition switch
Remove new ignition switch from packaging and compare with old switch to verify correct replacement part. Ensure any alignment pins or tabs are present and undamaged. If switch includes a new connector, transfer any required terminals from old harness per manufacturer instructions.
Verify the new switch is in the LOCK position before installation to ensure proper alignment with lock cylinder
  7. 7
    Install new ignition switch
Position the new ignition switch assembly onto the lock cylinder housing, ensuring alignment pins engage properly. The switch should slide into position smoothly without force. Verify the switch is fully seated against the housing before installing mounting screws.
  8. 8
    Secure ignition switch
Install the ignition switch mounting screws and tighten in a cross pattern if multiple screws are present. Use a torque wrench to tighten to specification. Verify the switch does not move or rotate after tightening.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect the main ignition switch electrical connector, pressing firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect any additional connectors for illumination or accessory circuits. Gently tug on each connector to verify secure connection.
  10. 10
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover, ensuring it fits properly around the ignition cylinder and all clips align. Install and tighten the upper cover screws. Position the lower cover and engage all retaining clips, then install and tighten the lower cover screws to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  11. 11
Reconnect battery and perform initial test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Insert key and verify it turns smoothly through all positions (LOCK, ACC, ON, START). Do not start engine yet. Check that steering lock engages in LOCK position and releases in ACC position.
ℹ️If switch was replaced due to failure, additional programming or key registration may be required before vehicle will start

Reassembly

  1. Verify all steering column covers are properly secured with no gaps or misalignment
  2. Confirm all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  3. Check that no tools or parts were left in the steering column area
  4. Return steering column to driver's preferred position

Verification

  • Turn key through all ignition positions (LOCK, ACC, ON, START) and verify smooth operation without binding
  • Verify steering lock engages when key is in LOCK position and removed
  • Verify steering lock releases when key is turned to ACC position
  • Start engine and verify all electrical systems function normally (radio, power windows, lights, etc.)
  • Check that all dashboard warning lights function properly during key-on self-test
  • Verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after startup
  • Test all key positions with engine running to ensure proper accessory and ignition operation
  • If vehicle is equipped with push-button start or smart key system, perform dealership programming verification
