This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the LED headlight module assembly on 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla models equipped with LED headlights.

Warnings

LED modules contain sensitive electronics. Handle by the housing only, never touch LED elements or circuit boards directly.
Do not operate headlights with module partially disconnected or improperly seated. This can damage the LED driver circuitry.
ℹ️OEM LED headlight modules require calibration after installation. Headlight aim adjustment is necessary after replacement.
ℹ️Ensure engine is cool before beginning work. Some components near the headlight assembly may retain heat.

Parts

  • LED headlight module assembly (left or right as needed) × 1 — 81110-02N40 (LH) or 81150-02N40 (RH)
  • Headlight dust cover seal (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  5. Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
  6. Identify which headlight module requires replacement (driver or passenger side)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove front bumper cover fasteners
Remove the plastic push clips along the top edge of the bumper cover above the grille area. Remove the Phillips screws securing the bumper cover to the fender liner on the side where you're working. You do not need to remove the entire bumper, but loosening these fasteners provides access clearance.
  2. 2
    Remove headlight module mounting bolts
Locate the three mounting bolts securing the headlight assembly to the body. One bolt is accessible from the top, one from the side near the fender, and one from behind near the radiator support. Use a 10mm socket with extensions to remove all three bolts. Keep these bolts organized as they may be slightly different lengths.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate the main LED module connector at the rear of the headlight assembly. Press the locking tab and pull straight back to disconnect. There may be additional connectors for the turn signal and side marker lights - disconnect these as well by pressing their respective locking tabs. Note the orientation of each connector for reassembly.
Do not pull on wires. Always grasp the connector body itself to avoid damaging the wiring harness.
  4. 4
    Remove headlight assembly from vehicle
Carefully pull the headlight assembly forward and toward the center of the vehicle to disengage it from the locating pins. The assembly is fragile - support it with both hands and avoid dropping or striking it against body panels. Set the assembly on a clean, padded work surface with the lens facing up.
  5. 5
Remove dust cover and access LED module
On the rear of the headlight assembly, rotate the rubber dust cover counterclockwise to remove it. This exposes the LED module mounting area. Inspect the dust cover seal for cracks or deterioration and replace if necessary to prevent moisture intrusion.
  6. 6
    Remove LED module retaining hardware
The LED module is secured by a metal retaining clip or wire bail. Carefully release the spring clip by squeezing the tabs or rotating it out of position (design varies by model year). Once released, the LED module can be withdrawn from the housing. Handle only by the metal heat sink, never touch the LED array or lens surface.
LED modules are electrostatically sensitive. Avoid touching circuit boards or electrical contacts. Work on a non-static surface.
  7. 7
    Disconnect LED module connector
At the base of the LED module, disconnect the internal power connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling gently. The module is now completely separated from the headlight housing. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or damage.
  8. 8
    Install new LED module
Remove the new LED module from its protective packaging. Connect the internal power connector to the new module, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Verify the connector is properly seated by gently tugging on it. Insert the new module into the headlight housing, aligning the tabs and positioning slots correctly.
  9. 9
Secure LED module with retaining hardware
Reinstall the metal retaining clip or wire bail to secure the LED module in the housing. Ensure the clip is fully engaged and the module cannot move or rattle. The module must be firmly seated against the housing to ensure proper heat dissipation and optical alignment.
  10. 10
    Reinstall dust cover
Position the rubber dust cover over the rear opening of the headlight assembly. Rotate clockwise until it seats fully and locks into place. Ensure the seal is evenly seated all around with no gaps that could allow moisture entry.
  11. 11
    Reinstall headlight assembly to vehicle
Guide the headlight assembly back into position, aligning the locating pins with their holes in the body structure. Push the assembly rearward until it seats flush against the body. Install the three mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification using a torque wrench.
Ensure headlight assembly is properly aligned with body gaps before final tightening. Misalignment can cause fitment issues and water leaks.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect all electrical connectors to the headlight assembly in reverse order of removal. Each connector should click audibly when properly seated. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is locked in place. Ensure no wires are pinched or routed incorrectly.
  13. 13
    Reinstall bumper cover fasteners
Reinstall all Phillips screws and push clips that were removed from the bumper cover and fender liner area. Ensure the bumper cover is properly aligned and all fasteners are secure.
  14. 14
    Reconnect battery and test system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (engine off) and test all headlight functions: low beam, high beam, turn signal, and side marker. Verify the LED module illuminates properly with no flickering or error messages on the instrument cluster.
ℹ️Some vehicles may display a headlight error message briefly after battery reconnection. This should clear after cycling the headlights on and off.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Confirm headlight assembly mounting bolts are torqued to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft)
  3. Check that all bumper cover fasteners are reinstalled
  4. Ensure dust cover is properly sealed to prevent moisture intrusion
  5. Verify battery terminal is torqued to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft) and connection is secure

Verification

  • With engine off and headlights on, verify low beam function operates correctly with no flickering or dimming
  • Test high beam function and verify proper switching between low and high beams
  • Activate turn signals and hazard lights to confirm all functions work correctly
  • Check for any warning lights or error messages on the instrument cluster related to the lighting system
  • Perform a visual inspection at night or in darkness to confirm proper light output and beam pattern
  • Schedule headlight aim adjustment as beam pattern may have shifted during module replacement
  • Verify no moisture or condensation appears inside the headlight housing after several days of operation
