Parts
- Shift cable assembly × 1 — 33820-02030 or equivalent
- Cable grommets/bushings (if damaged) × 1 — Inspect and replace as needed
- Console trim clips (if broken) × 3 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system discharge
- Raise and support front of vehicle on jack stands
- Allow engine and transmission to cool completely if recently driven
Procedure
- 1Remove center console componentsRemove the cup holder assembly by pulling upward. Remove the console side trim panels using a panel tool. Remove the shift knob by pulling the boot upward and removing the retaining clip underneath. Lift the shift knob assembly straight up and off the shifter shaft.
- 2Access shifter assemblyRemove the screws securing the front console trim panel. Carefully pull the console trim upward to release the clips. - 3Disconnect cable from shifterLocate the shift cable end at the shifter assembly. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cable end retaining clip. Press the cable lock tab and pull the cable end off the shifter pin. Note the cable routing through the floor pan grommet.
- 4Remove cable bracket at floor panFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the cable passing through the floor pan. Remove the cable bracket bolts securing the cable housing to the floor pan. Push the cable grommet through from the underside to release it from the floor pan.⚠Support the cable to prevent it from falling when released from floor panTorque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 5Access transmission cable connectionRemove the engine splash shield if equipped. Locate the shift cable at the transmission shifter lever on the driver side of the transmission. Clean the area around the cable connection to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.
- 6Disconnect cable from transmission leverUse a 14mm wrench to loosen the adjustment nut on the cable end. Remove the cable end from the transmission shift lever ball stud by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver. Do not damage the lever or cable end.Torque specAdjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 7Remove cable bracket from transmissionRemove the two bolts securing the cable bracket to the transmission housing. Pull the cable assembly away from the transmission and carefully route it out from the engine compartment, noting the exact routing path along chassis and away from heat sources.ℹ️Take photos of cable routing before complete removal for reference during installationTorque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 8Install new cable at transmissionRoute the new shift cable along the same path as the original, ensuring it does not contact exhaust components or sharp edges. Install the cable bracket to the transmission housing and secure with bolts. Connect the cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 9Route cable through floor panFrom underneath, push the cable grommet through the floor pan opening ensuring it seats fully. Install the cable bracket to the floor pan. Ensure the cable is not kinked or twisted along its entire length.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 10Connect cable to shifter assemblyFrom inside the vehicle, attach the cable end to the shifter pin. Install the retaining clip to secure the cable end. Verify the cable moves freely when the shifter is moved through all positions.
- 11Perform cable adjustmentPlace the shifter in PARK position. Underneath the vehicle, ensure the transmission shift lever is in the PARK position (fully rearward). Hand-tighten the adjustment nut on the cable end while holding the cable in position. Torque the adjustment nut to specification.⚠Incorrect adjustment will prevent proper gear engagement and may allow vehicle to roll when in PARKTorque specAdjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 12Test shift operationWith the engine off and brake pedal depressed, move the shifter through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) slowly. Verify each position engages with a positive click and the indicator shows the correct gear. Ensure the shifter cannot be moved out of PARK without pressing the brake pedal.
Reassembly
- Reinstall center console in reverse order of removal, ensuring all electrical connectors are reattached
- Reinstall shift knob assembly and boot, ensuring proper alignment
- Reinstall engine splash shield if equipped
- Lower vehicle from jack stands and reconnect battery negative terminal
- Verify all console trim panels and clips are properly secured
Verification
- Start the engine and verify the gear indicator matches the shifter position in all gears
- With brake applied, shift through all gears and confirm smooth engagement without binding
- Verify the engine starts only in PARK and NEUTRAL positions
- Confirm the shifter locks in PARK and cannot be moved without brake pedal depression
- Test reverse and drive operation by slowly moving the vehicle in each gear to confirm proper transmission engagement
- Check that vehicle does not roll when placed in PARK on a slight incline
