This procedure addresses speedometer cable replacement on 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla vehicles, though these models use an electronic vehicle speed sensor rather than a traditional speedometer cable.

Warnings

ℹ️2014-2019 Toyota Corolla does not use a mechanical speedometer cable. Speed data is transmitted electronically from the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission to the ECU and instrument cluster.
If speedometer is inoperative, diagnose the vehicle speed sensor, wiring harness, instrument cluster, or ECU before ordering parts.
Small amount of transmission fluid may drip when removing speed sensor from transmission case.

Parts

  • Vehicle Speed Sensor × 1 — 89411-02030 or equivalent
  • Speed sensor O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine and transmission to cool completely if recently driven
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  4. Raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands if additional clearance needed
  5. Place drain pan under transmission near speed sensor location

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate vehicle speed sensor
From underneath the vehicle on the driver side, locate the vehicle speed sensor on the left side of the transmission case near the CV axle. The sensor has a single electrical connector and is mounted vertically into the transmission housing.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the speed sensor electrical connector and pull straight away from the sensor. If connector is difficult to remove, carefully work it side to side while pulling. Do not pull on wires.
  3. 3
    Remove sensor mounting bolt
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the vehicle speed sensor to the transmission case. Keep bolt for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Extract speed sensor
Carefully pull the speed sensor straight out of the transmission housing. Slight twisting motion may help break the O-ring seal. A small amount of ATF may leak from the opening. Remove and discard the O-ring from the sensor bore.
  5. 5
    Inspect sensor and bore
Check the sensor drive gear for damage or excessive wear. Inspect the transmission bore for metal debris or contamination. Clean the sensor mounting surface on the transmission case with a lint-free cloth.
  6. 6
    Install new O-ring
Lubricate the new O-ring with a small amount of clean ATF and install it onto the new speed sensor body. Ensure O-ring is properly seated in its groove and not twisted.
  7. 7
    Install new speed sensor
Insert the new vehicle speed sensor into the transmission housing, aligning the drive gear with the transmission internal components. Push sensor fully into bore until it seats against the transmission case.
  8. 8
    Secure sensor mounting bolt
Install the mounting bolt and tighten to specified torque. Do not overtighten as this may crack the sensor housing or strip the aluminum transmission case threads.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Press the electrical connector firmly onto the speed sensor until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify connection is secure by gently pulling on the connector body, not the wires.
  10. 10
    Check transmission fluid level
If more than a few drops of ATF were lost during sensor removal, check and top off transmission fluid level according to manufacturer procedure. Wipe up any spilled fluid from transmission case and surrounding areas.
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Use an OBD-II scanner to clear any stored speed sensor fault codes (typically P0500, P0501, P0502, or P0503).
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised
  2. Ensure all electrical connections are properly secured and locked
  3. Verify no tools or parts were left in engine bay or under vehicle

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
  • With engine running, verify speedometer reads zero while vehicle is stationary
  • Road test vehicle and confirm speedometer operates correctly at various speeds
  • Verify odometer increments properly during test drive
  • Check for transmission fluid leaks around speed sensor after test drive
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes to confirm no speed sensor codes are present
