Replace tail light bulbs on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla by accessing the bulb sockets from inside the trunk area.

Warnings

Allow bulbs to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated to prevent burns
ℹ️Avoid touching glass portion of new halogen bulbs with bare hands as oil from skin can cause premature failure

Tools required

Phillips head screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool
Clean cloth or gloves

Parts

  • Tail light bulb (brake/turn signal) × 1 — 7443 or equivalent (verify bulb type)
  • Tail light bulb (tail/position) × 1 — 921 or equivalent (verify bulb type)

Preparation

  1. Turn off vehicle and remove key from ignition
  2. Open trunk fully to access interior trunk liner
  3. Identify which bulb needs replacement (brake, turn signal, reverse, or tail light)
  4. Purchase correct replacement bulb(s) based on vehicle specifications

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access tail light assembly
From inside the trunk, locate the trunk side liner panel on the side where the bulb needs replacement. Pull back the carpeted trunk liner to expose the rear of the tail light assembly. Some models may have clips or fasteners that need to be released.
  2. 2
    Locate bulb socket
Identify the correct bulb socket on the back of the tail light assembly. The assembly typically has 3-4 sockets depending on model. The largest socket is usually the brake/turn signal bulb, smaller ones are for tail and reverse lights. Note the position before removal.
  3. 3
    Remove bulb socket
Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees) until it releases from the tail light housing. Pull the socket straight out from the assembly. Do not pull on the wiring harness.
  4. 4
    Remove old bulb
For wedge-base bulbs (tail/position lights), pull the bulb straight out of the socket. For bayonet-style bulbs (brake/turn signal), press in gently and rotate counterclockwise to release, then pull out. Inspect socket for corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Install new bulb
Using a clean cloth or gloves, insert the new bulb into the socket. For wedge-base bulbs, push straight in until fully seated. For bayonet-style bulbs, align pins with socket grooves, push in, and rotate clockwise until it locks. Ensure bulb is secure in socket.
  6. 6
    Reinstall bulb socket
Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light assembly, aligning the tabs with the slots. Rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Ensure socket is fully seated and secure.
  7. 7
    Test operation
Before closing the trunk, turn on the vehicle ignition and test the new bulb. Check tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals as applicable. Verify proper operation of all functions.
  8. 8
    Restore trunk liner
Once bulb operation is verified, reposition the trunk side liner panel. Ensure any clips or fasteners are properly secured and the liner sits flush.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all bulb sockets are rotated and locked into position
  2. Verify trunk liner is properly positioned and secured
  3. Close trunk and perform final light function test from outside vehicle

Verification

  • Turn on headlights and verify tail lights illuminate
  • Have assistant press brake pedal while you verify brake lights illuminate
  • Activate turn signals and verify proper flashing operation on both sides
  • Check that all other tail light functions remain operational
