Warnings

⚠️Engine and coolant system must be completely cold before starting work to prevent severe burns
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack; always use proper jack stands
Toyota WS transmission fluid is specific to this transmission; do not substitute with other ATF types
Spark plugs are pre-gapped from factory; verify gap at 0.043 inches (1.1mm) but avoid excessive handling of electrode
ℹ️This procedure combines multiple service intervals; refer to owner's manual for individual service schedules

Fluids

  • Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil — 4.5 qt
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 7.5 qt
  • Toyota WS ATF — 4 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold (allow minimum 2 hours after last operation)
  2. Park vehicle on level surface, apply parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Raise and safely support front of vehicle on jack stands
  4. Remove engine undertray/splash shield if equipped
  5. Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning work

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain engine oil
Position drain pan under oil pan. Remove oil filler cap from top of engine. Using 14mm socket, loosen and remove oil drain plug from bottom of oil pan. Allow oil to drain completely (approximately 5-10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Install new crush washer on drain plug and reinstall.

  2. 2
    Replace oil filter
Locate oil filter on passenger side of engine block. Position drain pan beneath filter. Using oil filter wrench, remove old oil filter by turning counterclockwise. Clean filter mounting surface on engine block. Apply thin film of clean engine oil to new filter gasket. Hand-tighten new filter until gasket contacts mounting surface, then turn an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use filter wrench for installation.
  3. 3
    Replace spark plugs
Remove engine cover by pulling upward on cover (friction clips). Disconnect ignition coil connectors on all four cylinders. Remove 10mm bolts securing each ignition coil. Carefully pull coils straight up and out. Use compressed air to clean around spark plug wells. Using 5/8 inch spark plug socket with extension, remove all four spark plugs. Verify new spark plug gap at 0.043 inches. Apply small amount of anti-seize to spark plug threads (avoid electrode area). Install new plugs hand-tight, then turn an additional 1/16 turn with socket. Reinstall ignition coils and connectors.

  4. 4
    Replace engine air filter
Locate air filter housing on driver's side of engine bay. Release four clips securing air box cover. Lift cover and remove old air filter element. Inspect air box housing for debris and clean if necessary. Install new air filter element ensuring proper orientation (flow direction arrow if marked). Secure air box cover and ensure all four clips are fully engaged.

    Air Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stop tabs and lower completely. Locate cabin filter cover on right side of HVAC housing. Press tabs to release cover and remove. Slide out old cabin filter noting airflow direction arrow. Clean filter housing area. Install new cabin filter with arrow pointing in correct airflow direction. Reinstall cover and glove box.
  6. 6
    Replace PCV valve
Locate PCV valve in valve cover near rear of engine (driver's side of valve cover). Gently twist and pull PCV valve from valve cover grommet. Disconnect hose from PCV valve. Install new PCV valve into hose, then press assembly into valve cover grommet with twisting motion until fully seated. Ensure hose routing is correct and not kinked.
  7. 7
    Drain and refill coolant
With engine cold, remove radiator cap slowly to release any residual pressure. Locate radiator drain cock at bottom passenger side of radiator. Place drain container underneath and open drain cock. Drain coolant completely. Close drain cock. Fill cooling system with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) through radiator cap opening. Fill to base of radiator neck. Start engine and run at idle with heater on maximum. Add coolant as level drops. Continue until engine reaches operating temperature and upper radiator hose is hot. Stop engine, allow to cool, and top off coolant to proper level. Install radiator cap.
  8. 8
    Partial transmission fluid exchange
Locate transmission fluid dipstick (if equipped) or fill plug on top of transmission. Remove transmission drain plug from bottom of transmission pan using 10mm hex socket. Drain approximately 4 quarts of ATF into drain container. Reinstall drain plug with new washer if applicable. Refill with exactly the same amount of Toyota WS ATF that was drained through dipstick tube or fill hole. Check fluid level with engine at operating temperature in Park position. Adjust as necessary.
  9. 9
    Clean throttle body
Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent fault codes. Locate throttle body on intake manifold. Disconnect electrical connector and air intake duct from throttle body. Using throttle body cleaner and clean cloth, carefully clean throttle plate and bore. Do not force throttle plate open manually. Allow to dry completely. Reconnect air duct and electrical connector. Reconnect battery.
  10. 10
Refill engine oil and complete service
Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised. Using funnel, pour 4.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil into engine through filler cap opening. Install oil filler cap. Start engine and allow to run for 30 seconds, then shut off. Wait 5 minutes for oil to drain to pan. Check oil level with dipstick and verify level is between MIN and MAX marks. Check underneath vehicle for any oil leaks at drain plug and filter. Reinstall engine cover. Reset maintenance reminder light if equipped.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine undertray/splash shield if removed
  2. Verify all fluid levels are correct with engine at operating temperature
  3. Ensure all clips, covers, and fasteners are properly secured
  4. Verify glove box operates normally and cabin filter cover is secure
  5. Check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked

Verification

  • Start engine and verify smooth idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Check for any fluid leaks under vehicle after engine reaches operating temperature
  • Verify oil pressure warning light extinguishes immediately after startup
  • Test drive vehicle for 10-15 minutes to verify proper engine performance and transmission shifting
  • Re-check all fluid levels after test drive and top off if necessary
  • Verify coolant level is stable after cooling system has cycled through operating temperature
  • Confirm no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Verify engine cover and air filter housing are properly secured with no rattles
