Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- If needed for access, raise and support the front of the vehicle on jack stands and remove the driver's side front wheel
- Remove plastic engine undercover if equipped using 10mm socket on retaining clips
- Locate the oil level sensor on the lower driver's side of the oil pan
Procedure
- 1Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the oil level sensor. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight off the sensor. Inspect the connector for damage or corrosion.
- 2Prepare for oil drainagePosition an oil drain pan directly beneath the oil level sensor. Approximately 0.25-0.5 quarts of oil will drain when the sensor is removed. Have shop towels ready to control spillage.
- 3Remove old oil level sensorUsing a 19mm wrench or socket, carefully loosen the oil level sensor by turning counterclockwise. Once loose, unthread the sensor by hand and remove it completely. Allow oil to drain into the pan.
- 4Clean mounting surfaceWipe the sensor mounting hole in the oil pan with a clean shop towel. Use a wire brush if necessary to remove any old gasket material or debris. Ensure the sealing surface is clean and smooth.
- 5Inspect new sensorVerify the new oil level sensor has a new O-ring or gasket installed. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean engine oil to aid installation and prevent damage during threading.
- 6Install new oil level sensorThread the new oil level sensor into the oil pan by hand until it seats against the gasket surface. Ensure it threads smoothly without cross-threading. - 7Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the oil level sensor until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked in place.
- 8Check and top off engine oilRemove the oil filler cap and add approximately 0.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil to compensate for oil lost during sensor replacement. Check the oil level with the dipstick and add more if needed to reach the full mark.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the plastic engine undercover if removed, ensuring all clips are properly secured
- Reinstall the driver's side front wheel if removed and torque lug nuts to specification
- Lower vehicle to the ground
Verification
- Start the engine and verify the oil pressure warning light turns off within a few seconds
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and check for oil leaks around the sensor
- Turn off the engine and recheck oil level after 5 minutes, adding oil if necessary to reach the full mark
