Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to warm to operating temperature, then shut off and wait 10 minutes to cool slightly
- Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning
- Verify replacement parts match OEM specifications for 2019-2024 RAV4 2.5L I4
Procedure
- 1Lift and secure vehicleLoosen all wheel lug nuts one full turn while vehicle is on ground. Lift vehicle using floor jack at designated front and rear jacking points. Secure vehicle on jack stands positioned at proper lift points per owner's manual. Remove all four wheels and set aside.
- 2Remove engine splash shield fastenersLocate the plastic engine splash shield/under cover beneath the engine. Remove the plastic push clips and bolts securing the shield. Carefully lower the shield to access the oil drain plug and oil filter. Note position of clips for reinstallation.
- 3Drain engine oilPosition drain pan directly under oil drain plug on bottom of oil pan. Using 14mm socket, loosen drain plug slowly. Remove plug by hand for final turns, allowing oil to drain completely (approximately 5-7 minutes). Inspect old crush washer and replace with new washer. Clean drain plug threads and oil pan surface.⚠Hot oil can cause severe burns. Wear appropriate gloves and ensure oil has cooled to safe handling temperature.
- 4Replace oil filterLocate oil filter on front passenger side of engine block. Position drain pan beneath filter. Using oil filter wrench, rotate filter counterclockwise to remove. Clean filter mounting surface on engine block. Apply thin film of new oil to rubber gasket on new filter. Install new filter by hand, tightening 3/4 turn after gasket contacts mounting surface. Do not over-tighten.
- 5Reinstall drain plug and refill engine oilInstall oil drain plug with new crush washer. Torque drain plug to specification. Reinstall engine splash shield, ensuring all clips and fasteners are properly seated. Lower vehicle from jack stands temporarily. Open hood and remove oil filler cap. Using funnel, add 4.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 oil. Wait 2 minutes, check dipstick, and add remaining oil to reach proper level between MIN and MAX marks.
- 6Replace engine air filterLocate air filter housing on driver's side of engine bay. Release metal clips or remove screws securing air box cover. Lift cover and remove old engine air filter. Inspect air box for debris and clean if necessary. Install new air filter, ensuring proper seating and directional arrow (if marked) points toward engine. Reinstall cover and secure all clips firmly.
- 7Replace cabin air filterOpen glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stoppers, allowing box to swing fully downward. Locate cabin air filter cover behind glove box. Release cover tabs and remove cover. Slide out old cabin air filter, noting orientation. Install new cabin air filter with airflow direction arrow pointing down. Reinstall cover and reset glove box stoppers.
- 8Perform tire rotationFor FWD RAV4, rotate tires in forward cross pattern: front left to rear left, front right to rear right, rear left to front right, rear right to front left. Inspect each tire for abnormal wear, damage, or embedded objects. Check brake pad thickness through wheel openings (minimum 3mm remaining).
- 9Reinstall wheels and torque lug nutsMount each tire to correct position per rotation pattern. Hand-thread all lug nuts to prevent cross-threading. Using torque wrench, tighten lug nuts in star pattern to specification. Lower vehicle completely to ground, then perform final torque verification in star pattern with vehicle weight on wheels.
- 10Adjust tire pressuresCheck tire pressure on all four tires plus spare using accurate tire pressure gauge. Refer to driver's door jamb sticker for correct pressures (typically 36 PSI front, 34 PSI rear for 2019-2024 RAV4, but verify for your specific model). Adjust as necessary.
- 11Inspect fluid levels and componentsWith engine cold, check coolant level in overflow reservoir (should be between LOW and FULL marks). Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir (should be at MAX line). Inspect washer fluid and top off if below half full. Visually inspect drive belts for cracks or glazing. Check battery terminals for corrosion and clean if necessary. Inspect air intake system for cracks or loose connections.
- 12Start engine and verify oil pressureStart engine and verify oil pressure light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes while monitoring for oil leaks around drain plug and filter. Check under vehicle with inspection light for any drips. Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes. Recheck oil level on dipstick and top off if necessary to reach full mark.
Reassembly
- Ensure all drain plug and lug nut torque specifications have been met
- Verify all clips, covers, and panels have been reinstalled properly
- Confirm glove box operates normally after cabin filter replacement
- Double-check that engine oil level is correct after final check
Verification
- Start engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
- Check under vehicle for any fluid leaks after 5 minute idle period
- Verify oil level is between MIN and MAX marks on dipstick with engine off
- Confirm all tire pressures match door jamb specifications
- Test drive vehicle 5-10 miles, then recheck oil level and inspect for leaks
- Reset maintenance reminder light in vehicle settings menu per owner's manual
- Document service date and mileage for maintenance records
