This procedure replaces the driver's airbag module in the steering wheel of a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4, requiring battery disconnection, airbag module removal, and proper torque specifications to ensure safe operation.
Warnings
⚠️AIRBAG SYSTEM: Improper handling or installation of airbag components can result in accidental deployment causing serious injury or death. If you are not completely confident in performing this work, seek professional service immediately.
⚠️Wait a MINIMUM of 2 minutes after disconnecting the battery before working on airbag components. The airbag system capacitor must fully discharge to prevent accidental deployment.
⚠️Never use electrical test equipment (except approved multimeters) on airbag circuits. Never attempt to repair airbag wiring or connectors. Replace damaged components only.
⚠Place the airbag module face-up on a clean, flat surface away from the work area. Never place it face-down or allow anything to rest on top of it.
⚠Do not strike, drop, or allow moisture to contact the airbag module. Any physical damage requires replacement of the entire module.
ℹ️This procedure will set an airbag system fault code that must be cleared with a scan tool after installation. The airbag warning light will remain on until codes are cleared.

Parts
- Driver airbag module assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Airbag connector lock clip (if damaged) × 1 — Inspect existing
Preparation
- Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground with the ignition off and key removed
- Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and secure the cable away from the battery post
- Wait a minimum of 2 minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge completely
- Verify ignition is OFF and will remain OFF during the entire procedure
- Prepare a clean, padded surface away from the vehicle to place the removed airbag module face-up
Procedure
- 1Access airbag module mounting boltsFrom behind the steering wheel, locate the two Torx T30 access holes on either side of the steering wheel (left and right sides, approximately at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions). These holes provide access to the airbag module mounting bolts.
- 2Remove airbag module mounting boltsInsert the Torx T30 screwdriver into each access hole and remove both airbag module mounting bolts. Turn counterclockwise to loosen. Keep these bolts in a safe location for reinstallation. The airbag module will now be loose but still connected by the wiring harness.⚠️Ensure the battery has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes before performing this step.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 3Carefully pull airbag module forwardGently pull the airbag module straight toward you, away from the steering wheel. Pull evenly to disengage it from the steering wheel hub. Do not use excessive force or twist the module. The wiring harness connector will be visible behind the module.⚠Support the weight of the airbag module with your hands at all times. Do not allow it to hang by the wiring harness.
- 4Disconnect airbag connectorLocate the yellow airbag connector behind the module. Press down or slide (depending on clip design) the connector lock tab and carefully disconnect the electrical connector. Note the orientation of the connector lock mechanism for reassembly. Some models have a secondary red lock clip that must be released first.⚠Do not pull on the wiring. Release the lock mechanism fully before attempting to separate the connector halves.
- 5Disconnect horn connector (if equipped)If your model has a separate horn connector attached to the airbag module, disconnect it by pressing the release tab and pulling the connector apart. Not all RAV4 models have this separate connector; the horn circuit may be integrated into the airbag connector.
- 6Remove old airbag moduleRemove the airbag module completely from the vehicle. Immediately place it face-up on the clean, padded surface you prepared, away from the work area. Store in a secure location where it cannot be disturbed or damaged.⚠Never place the airbag module face-down. Always place it face-up in a safe location away from people and work areas.
- 7Inspect mounting points and connectorsExamine the steering wheel airbag mounting surface for damage or debris. Inspect the yellow airbag connector on the vehicle harness for corrosion, bent pins, or damage. Check that the connector lock mechanism is intact and functional. Clean any debris from the mounting area with a clean, dry cloth.
- 8Connect new airbag module connectorAlign the yellow airbag connector on the new module with the vehicle harness connector. Push the connectors together firmly until you hear or feel a positive click. Ensure the connector lock mechanism fully engages. If present, install the secondary red lock clip.⚠Verify the connector is fully seated and locked. An incomplete connection will prevent proper airbag operation and may set fault codes.
- 9Reconnect horn connector (if equipped)If your model has a separate horn connector, reconnect it to the airbag module. Press firmly until it clicks into place and verify the lock tab is engaged.
- 10Position airbag module onto steering wheelCarefully guide the airbag module wiring back through the steering wheel opening. Align the module with the mounting holes in the steering wheel hub. Ensure the module sits flush and even against the steering wheel with no gaps. The TOP marking on the module (if present) should be oriented upward.
- 11Install and torque airbag module mounting boltsThread both Torx T30 mounting bolts by hand through the access holes on each side of the steering wheel. Tighten finger-tight initially. Using the torque wrench with Torx T30 bit, torque both bolts to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft) in an alternating pattern. This is a critical safety torque specification.⚠️Proper torque is critical for airbag deployment performance. Over-torquing can damage the module; under-torquing can allow the module to separate during deployment. Use a calibrated torque wrench.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Ensure no tools or metal objects are near the battery or airbag system during this step.
- 13Clear airbag system fault codesUsing an OBD-II scan tool capable of accessing airbag system codes, connect to the vehicle's diagnostic port. Clear all stored airbag system fault codes. The airbag warning light on the instrument cluster should illuminate when the ignition is turned ON, then extinguish after 6-7 seconds if the system is functioning properly.⚠If the airbag warning light remains illuminated after clearing codes, there is a system fault. Do not drive the vehicle. Seek professional diagnosis immediately.
Reassembly
- Verify all connectors are fully seated and locked before reconnecting the battery
- Ensure both airbag module mounting bolts are torqued to the correct specification of 7.0 Nm
- Confirm no tools or objects are left in or around the steering wheel area
Verification
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine not running). The airbag warning light should illuminate briefly (6-7 seconds) then extinguish
- Start the engine and verify the airbag warning light remains OFF during normal operation
- Use a scan tool to verify no active airbag system fault codes are present
- Test the horn operation to confirm horn circuit functionality (if applicable to your model)
- Gently pull on the edges of the airbag module to confirm it is securely mounted with no movement or gaps
- If the airbag warning light remains illuminated or any fault codes are present, do not drive the vehicle and seek professional service immediately
