Replace the brake light switch located above the brake pedal to restore brake light functionality and ensure proper operation of cruise control, push-button start, and shift interlock systems.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEM: Brake lights are essential for preventing rear-end collisions. A faulty brake light switch can also prevent shift interlock from releasing, cause cruise control malfunction, or prevent push-button start operation. Verify proper operation before returning vehicle to service.
⚠Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before working near the brake pedal to allow SRS airbag system to discharge.
⚠The brake pedal and switch are located in a confined space. Avoid forcing components as the brake pedal assembly and master cylinder can be damaged.
ℹ️This procedure does not require brake fluid handling or bleeding. The switch is electrical only.

Parts
- Brake light switch × 1 — Toyota OEM 84340-02150 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle interior
- Open driver's door and adjust seat to full rearward position for maximum access
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds for airbag system discharge
- Remove lower dashboard trim panel below steering column if necessary for access (two 10mm bolts and clips on most models)
- Use flashlight to locate brake light switch mounted on bracket above brake pedal arm
Procedure
- 1Locate and inspect brake light switchPosition yourself in the driver's footwell with adequate lighting. The brake light switch is mounted on a bracket above the brake pedal arm, with the switch plunger contacting the brake pedal when released. Identify the electrical connector and the switch locking mechanism (typically a quarter-turn or push-tab design).
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the brake light switch. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull it straight away from the switch. The connector may be stiff due to the confined space. Avoid pulling on the wiring harness itself.
- 3Remove old brake light switchThe switch is retained by a quarter-turn bayonet mount or push-tab mechanism. Rotate the switch body counterclockwise approximately 30 degrees (if bayonet style) or press the release tabs on both sides (if tab style) while pulling the switch away from the mounting bracket. The switch plunger will disengage from the brake pedal arm. Note the orientation and position for installation.
- 4Prepare new brake light switchRemove the new switch from packaging and verify it matches the old switch design. Check that the plunger moves freely and returns to the extended position. Do not adjust the plunger length unless the new switch includes specific adjustment instructions.
- 5Install new brake light switchAlign the new switch with the mounting bracket, ensuring the plunger will contact the brake pedal arm when the pedal is in the released position. Insert the switch into the bracket and rotate clockwise (bayonet style) or push firmly until tabs click (tab style). Verify the switch is fully seated and locked in position. The brake pedal should push the plunger in when at rest.
- 6Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the new switch until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure. Ensure wiring is not pinched or interfering with brake pedal movement.
- 7Reinstall lower dashboard trimIf the lower dashboard trim panel was removed, align it with the mounting points and secure with the 10mm bolts and press clips back into position. Ensure trim does not interfere with brake pedal operation.
- 8Reconnect battery and clear fault codesReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify the brake warning light on the instrument cluster illuminates and extinguishes normally. The vehicle may require fault codes to be cleared if a brake switch code was previously stored.
Reassembly
- Verify all dashboard trim panels are properly secured and aligned
- Return driver's seat to normal operating position
- Ensure no tools or parts are left in the footwell area
Verification
- With ignition ON (engine off), have an assistant observe the rear brake lights while you press and release the brake pedal. All brake lights should illuminate immediately when pedal is pressed and extinguish when released
- Verify the transmission shift interlock functions: with engine running, ensure the shifter cannot be moved from Park without pressing the brake pedal
- Test push-button start: verify the engine can only be started when the brake pedal is pressed
- If equipped with cruise control, verify it disengages immediately when the brake pedal is pressed
- Check instrument cluster for any brake-related warning lights or messages
- Test drive in a safe area to confirm brake lights operate properly during normal braking
- If brake light malfunction warning appears or any system does not operate correctly, recheck switch installation and electrical connection. If problems persist, professional diagnosis is required
