This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the EVAP purge valve on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 gasoline engine, which controls evaporative emissions from the fuel system.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work to avoid burns from hot components.
⚠The EVAP system contains fuel vapors. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid open flames.
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery may reset radio presets and other electronic settings.

Parts
- EVAP purge valve (VSV) × 1 — Toyota 25701-0V010 or equivalent
- Vacuum hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system depressurization
- Locate EVAP purge valve on driver's side of engine bay, mounted to intake manifold or nearby bracket
Procedure
- 1Access the EVAP purge valveRemove the engine cover if equipped by pulling upward on the cover to release the retaining clips. Set aside. The EVAP purge valve is typically mounted on the driver's side of the engine near the intake manifold with a black two-wire electrical connector and two vacuum hoses attached.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the purge valve electrical connector and pull straight away from the valve. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If the connector is difficult to remove, gently wiggle while pulling.
- 3Disconnect inlet vacuum hoseUsing needle-nose pliers if needed, squeeze the clamp on the inlet vacuum hose (coming from the charcoal canister) and slide it back away from the valve nipple. Twist and pull the hose off the valve inlet port. Mark this hose position if needed for reassembly reference.
- 4Disconnect outlet vacuum hoseSqueeze the clamp on the outlet vacuum hose (going to the intake manifold) and slide it back. Twist and pull the hose off the valve outlet port. Inspect both hoses for cracks, hardening, or damage and replace if necessary.
- 5Remove purge valve mounting boltUsing a 10mm socket with extension, remove the single mounting bolt securing the purge valve to its bracket. Keep the bolt in a safe location for reinstallation.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 6Remove EVAP purge valvePull the purge valve straight out from its mounting bracket. The valve may require slight wiggling to clear the bracket. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion.
- 7Prepare new purge valveRemove the new EVAP purge valve from packaging. Verify the electrical connector and vacuum port configuration matches the old valve. Note the directional arrow on the valve body indicating flow direction (from canister to intake manifold).
- 8Install new purge valvePosition the new purge valve into the mounting bracket with the electrical connector facing the correct orientation for easy connection. Ensure the valve is fully seated in the bracket before installing the bolt.
- 9Install mounting boltThread the mounting bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Verify the valve is secure and properly oriented in the bracket.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 10Connect vacuum hosesPush the inlet vacuum hose (from canister) onto the inlet port until it bottoms out. Slide the clamp into position over the connection. Repeat for the outlet hose (to manifold) on the outlet port. Ensure proper flow direction is maintained according to valve markings. Verify hose clamps are positioned correctly and secure.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the purge valve until you hear and feel a distinct click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.
- 12Reinstall engine coverIf the engine cover was removed, align the mounting grommets with the posts and press down firmly until all clips engage. The cover should sit flush and secure.
- 13Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Reset the clock and radio presets as needed.
Reassembly
- Verify all vacuum hoses are properly connected and clamps are tight
- Ensure electrical connector is fully engaged with locking tab secured
- Confirm engine cover is properly installed if equipped
- Double-check no tools or parts are left in engine bay
Verification
- Start the engine and listen for any vacuum leaks (hissing sounds) around the purge valve area
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify smooth idle with no hesitation
- Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any EVAP system codes (P0441, P0443, P0446, etc.)
- Perform a test drive and monitor for check engine light or driveability issues
- If possible, perform an EVAP system leak test using a scan tool to verify proper purge valve operation
- Verify no fuel vapor odors are present around the valve installation
