Parts

  • Horn assembly × 1 — 86520-42130 or equivalent
  • Horn bracket (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Turn off ignition and remove key/fob from vehicle
  3. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal using 10mm socket
  4. Wait 90 seconds for airbag system capacitor discharge
  5. If accessing from below, raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands or use ramps for clearance

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the horn location
The horn is mounted behind the front bumper on the driver's side, near the radiator support. From underneath the vehicle, locate the horn assembly behind the lower bumper opening. You may need to remove the plastic splash shield clips for better access using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the horn electrical connector
Locate the single-wire electrical connector attached to the horn terminal. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the horn terminal. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage.
  3. 3
Test the horn circuit (optional diagnostic step)
If diagnosing a horn failure, use a multimeter to check for 12V at the connector when an assistant presses the horn button. This confirms the circuit is functioning before replacing the horn. Also check the ground connection integrity.
  4. 4
    Remove the horn mounting bolt
Using a 12mm socket with extension, remove the single bolt securing the horn to its mounting bracket. The horn may be mounted with the terminal facing down or to the side depending on model year variation. Support the horn as you remove the bolt to prevent it from falling.

  5. 5
    Remove the horn assembly
Pull the horn assembly away from the mounting bracket. Note the orientation and position of any rubber isolator or spacer that may be present between the horn and bracket. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or excessive corrosion.
  6. 6
    Inspect and clean mounting surfaces
Clean the mounting bracket surface with a wire brush if corrosion is present. Inspect the ground connection point on the bracket. If installing a new horn, transfer any rubber isolator or spacer from the old horn to the new one.
  7. 7
Install the new or cleaned horn
Position the horn assembly onto the mounting bracket in the correct orientation with the terminal accessible for electrical connection. Ensure any rubber isolator is properly seated. Install the mounting bolt hand-tight first to verify alignment.

  8. 8
    Torque the horn mounting bolt
Using a torque wrench and 12mm socket, tighten the horn mounting bolt to specification. Ensure the horn is securely mounted and does not rotate on the bracket.

  9. 9
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminal until it clicks into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Gently tug on the wire to confirm the connection is secure.
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Reset the clock and radio presets if necessary. Press the horn button on the steering wheel to verify proper operation before reassembling any removed panels.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall any plastic splash shields or panels removed for access
  2. Secure all trim clips fully to prevent rattles
  3. Lower vehicle if raised
  4. Verify no tools or parts were left in the engine bay

Verification

  • Press the horn button on the steering wheel and verify the horn sounds with proper volume and tone
  • Check that the horn responds immediately without delay
  • Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
  • Confirm all reinstalled panels and shields are secure and properly aligned
