Parts
- Neutral safety switch (Inhibitor switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- O-ring for neutral safety switch × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Toyota WS ATF — 1.5 qt
Preparation
- Ensure the transmission is cold or has cooled for at least 30 minutes
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Shift transmission to Park position
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds for airbag system to discharge
- Raise and safely support vehicle on jack stands at manufacturer-approved lift points
- Remove the front plastic undercover to access transmission area
Procedure
- 1Remove engine undercoverRemove the engine undercover fasteners and lower the plastic shield to access the transmission from below. The undercover is secured with push clips and bolts.
- 2Locate neutral safety switchIdentify the neutral safety switch on the driver's side of the transmission case, near the shift cable connection point. The switch has an electrical connector on top and is secured by two bolts.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and disconnect it from the neutral safety switch. Move the connector aside to prevent it from being contaminated by ATF.
- 4Position drain panPlace a drain pan directly beneath the neutral safety switch. When the switch is removed, transmission fluid will drain from the opening.
- 5Remove switch mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the neutral safety switch to the transmission case. Keep these bolts as they will be reused.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 6Remove neutral safety switchCarefully pull the switch straight out from the transmission case. Allow ATF to drain into the pan. Note the orientation of the switch and the position of any alignment features before complete removal.⚠ATF will drain immediately upon switch removal. Keep drain pan in position.
- 7Inspect and clean mounting areaInspect the switch bore in the transmission case for debris or metal particles. Clean the mating surface on the transmission case with a shop rag. Check the condition of the manual valve shaft inside the bore.
- 8Prepare new switchInstall a new O-ring onto the new neutral safety switch. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean ATF to ease installation and prevent tearing.
- 9Install new neutral safety switchAlign the switch with the manual valve shaft, ensuring proper orientation. The switch will only fit in one position. Push the switch into the transmission case until it seats fully against the case.
- 10Install and torque mounting boltsInstall the two mounting bolts and torque them to specification in a cross pattern. Do not overtighten as this can damage the switch housing or transmission case.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the electrical connector to the neutral safety switch, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.
- 12Reinstall undercoverReinstall the engine undercover and secure all fasteners. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.
- 13Add transmission fluidWith the vehicle level, add approximately 1.0-1.5 quarts of Toyota WS ATF through the transmission dipstick tube to replace the fluid lost during switch replacement. Use a funnel to avoid spills.
- 14Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal. The vehicle computer will need to relearn shift points over the next several drive cycles.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify undercover is properly secured with all fasteners installed
- Check transmission fluid level after warming engine to operating temperature
- Clean any spilled ATF from surrounding components
Verification
- With engine off and brake pedal depressed, verify the engine will only start in Park and Neutral positions
- Verify the engine will not start in Drive, Reverse, or any other gear position
- Check the instrument cluster to confirm the correct gear position is displayed when shifting through all gears
- Test drive the vehicle and verify smooth shifting operation
- Verify no transmission fluid leaks are present around the neutral safety switch after test drive
- Recheck transmission fluid level with engine at operating temperature and add if necessary to bring to proper level on dipstick
