This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the oil pressure sensor on the 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 gasoline engine.

Warnings

Perform this procedure with the engine cold to avoid burns from hot engine components and oil.
ℹ️A small amount of engine oil may drain from the sensor port when removed. Have rags or a small drain pan ready.
Do not overtighten the oil pressure sensor as this may damage the threads in the engine block or crack the sensor body.

Tools required

19mm deep socketEssential
Socket wrench or ratchetEssential
Torque wrench (10-30 Nm range)Essential
Oil drain pan or rags
Wire brush or shop towels
Flashlight or work light

Parts

  • Oil pressure sensor × 1 — Use OEM Toyota specification
  • Thread sealant (non-hardening) × 1 — Toyota FIPG or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Ensure the engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical shorts
  4. Allow at least 30 minutes after engine shutdown for oil to drain back to the pan

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate the oil pressure sensor
Open the hood and locate the oil pressure sensor on the lower front side of the engine block, just above the oil filter housing. It is a cylindrical sensor with a single wire connector.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the electrical connector
Press the tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight off the oil pressure sensor. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself.
  3. 3
    Remove the oil pressure sensor
Using a 19mm deep socket and ratchet, carefully loosen and remove the oil pressure sensor by turning counterclockwise. Be prepared for a small amount of oil to drip from the port. Allow any residual oil to drain completely before proceeding.
  4. 4
    Clean the sensor port
Inspect the sensor port threads in the engine block for debris or old sealant. Use a wire brush or clean shop towel to remove any contamination. Ensure the sealing surface is clean and free of damage.
  5. 5
    Prepare the new sensor
Apply a small amount of non-hardening thread sealant to the threads of the new oil pressure sensor. Do not apply sealant to the first two threads to prevent sealant from entering the oil passages.
  6. 6
Install the new oil pressure sensor
Thread the new oil pressure sensor into the engine block by hand until it seats against the mounting surface. Ensure it threads in smoothly without cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten to specification.
    Torque spec
    Oil Pressure Sensor20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the oil pressure sensor until it clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.
  8. 8
    Reconnect the battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the terminal clamp securely.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
  2. Wipe up any spilled oil from the engine block and surrounding components
  3. Double-check that the sensor is torqued to specification

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify that the oil pressure warning light on the dashboard goes off within 2-3 seconds
  • Allow the engine to idle for 2-3 minutes and inspect the oil pressure sensor for any oil leaks around the threads
  • Use an OBD-II scanner to verify no oil pressure sensor fault codes are present
  • Check the oil level on the dipstick and top off if necessary with Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil
  • Take a short test drive and confirm the oil pressure warning light does not illuminate during normal operation
