Parts

  • PCV valve × 1 — Toyota 12204-0P011 or equivalent
  • PCV valve grommet × 1 — Replace if damaged

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate the PCV valve
The PCV valve is mounted on the driver side of the valve cover, near the firewall. It has a rubber hose connected to the intake manifold. Identify the valve and trace the connecting hose to familiarize yourself with the routing.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the vacuum hose
Using needle-nose pliers or hose clamp pliers, carefully release the hose clamp securing the vacuum hose to the PCV valve. Slide the clamp back along the hose. Gently twist and pull the hose off the PCV valve nipple. If the hose is stuck, carefully work it back and forth while pulling.
  3. 3
    Remove the PCV valve
Grip the PCV valve firmly and rotate counterclockwise while pulling upward to remove it from the valve cover grommet. The valve may require some force to break free from the grommet seal. If extremely tight, gently rock the valve side to side while pulling upward to avoid tearing the grommet.
  4. 4
    Inspect the grommet
Examine the rubber grommet in the valve cover for cracks, tears, or deterioration. If the grommet is damaged, carefully pry it out using a small flathead screwdriver or pick tool. Clean the valve cover opening of any debris or old rubber. Install the new grommet by pressing it firmly into the opening until fully seated.
  5. 5
    Install the new PCV valve
Insert the new PCV valve into the valve cover grommet. Push down firmly while rotating clockwise until the valve is fully seated. The valve should sit flush against the grommet. If using a torque wrench, tighten to specification, but typically hand-tight is sufficient as over-tightening can damage the grommet.

  6. 6
    Reconnect the vacuum hose
Push the vacuum hose firmly onto the PCV valve nipple until it bottoms out. Slide the hose clamp back into position over the connection point, approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the hose. Ensure the clamp is tight and the hose is secure.
  7. 7
    Verify installation
Visually inspect all connections to ensure the PCV valve is properly seated and the hose is securely attached with the clamp in place. Gently tug on the hose to confirm it will not pull off during operation.

Reassembly

  1. No disassembly was required beyond the PCV valve and hose
  2. Ensure all hose clamps are properly positioned and tight

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2-3 minutes
  • Listen for any unusual vacuum leaks or hissing sounds near the PCV valve area
  • Check for proper idle quality - rough idle may indicate an improperly seated valve or loose hose connection
  • Verify no check engine light illuminates after test drive
  • Visually confirm no oil leakage around the PCV valve grommet after engine reaches operating temperature
