This procedure covers the replacement of the power steering return hose on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with a 2.5L I4 engine. Note that this vehicle uses electric power steering with no fluid reservoir; verify the correct system before ordering parts.

Warnings

The 2019-2024 RAV4 2.5L I4 FWD uses electric power steering (EPS) and has no hydraulic power steering fluid. If you are seeing a return hose, verify your vehicle configuration as this may indicate a hybrid or AWD model with different specifications.
If your vehicle does have a hydraulic steering system, work in a well-ventilated area and use proper eye protection when disconnecting pressurized lines.
ℹ️This procedure assumes a non-standard configuration. Most 2019-2024 RAV4 2.5L FWD models use EPS and do not have power steering hoses.

Parts

  • Power steering return hose × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • O-rings for power steering fittings × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Verify your vehicle actually has hydraulic power steering by checking for a power steering fluid reservoir under the hood
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  3. Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
  4. Raise and secure front of vehicle on jack stands
  5. Remove engine splash shield if equipped using 10mm socket
  6. Place drain pan under power steering system components

Procedure

  1. 1
Locate the power steering return hose
Identify the return hose routing from the power steering rack to the reservoir. The return hose is the lower-pressure line, typically smaller in diameter than the pressure hose. Trace the hose to identify all mounting clips and connection points.
  2. 2
    Drain power steering fluid
Using a fluid extractor or turkey baster, remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering reservoir. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times with the engine off to help move fluid through the system into the reservoir for easier removal. Position drain pan under the return hose connections.
  3. 3
    Disconnect return hose at reservoir
Loosen the hose clamp at the reservoir connection using a flathead screwdriver or appropriate socket. Twist and pull the hose off the reservoir fitting. Allow remaining fluid to drain into the pan. Plug the reservoir opening with a clean rag to prevent contamination.
  4. 4
Disconnect return hose at steering rack
Using a line wrench to prevent rounding, carefully loosen the fitting at the steering rack end of the return hose. If the connection uses a threaded fitting rather than a hose clamp, use the appropriate size line wrench. Allow fluid to drain completely. Remove and discard old O-rings from the fitting.

  5. 5
    Remove hose mounting clips
Release any mounting clips or brackets securing the return hose along its routing path. Note the exact position and orientation of each clip for reinstallation. Remove the old return hose from the vehicle.
  6. 6
    Prepare new return hose
Compare the new return hose to the old one to verify correct length and fitting types. Install new O-rings onto the threaded fitting ends, lubricating them lightly with clean power steering fluid. Do not reuse old O-rings.
  7. 7
Install new return hose at steering rack
Route the new return hose into position. Thread the fitting onto the steering rack by hand to ensure proper alignment and prevent cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a line wrench and torque wrench to tighten to specification.

  8. 8
    Connect return hose at reservoir
Push the hose firmly onto the reservoir fitting until it seats completely. Install the hose clamp and position it approximately 10mm from the end of the hose. Tighten the clamp securely but do not overtighten, which can damage the hose.
  9. 9
    Secure hose routing clips
Reinstall all mounting clips and brackets in their original positions to prevent hose vibration and contact with other components. Ensure the hose routing matches the original path without kinks, sharp bends, or contact with hot or moving components.
  10. 10
    Refill power steering system
Remove the rag from the reservoir and fill with fresh power steering fluid to the cold fill line. Use only the fluid type specified in your owner's manual. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times with the engine off to distribute fluid through the system. Recheck and top off fluid level as needed.
  11. 11
    Bleed air from system
Start the engine and let it idle. Turn the steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock 5-10 times without holding at full lock. Check fluid level frequently and add as needed. Continue until no air bubbles appear in the reservoir and the fluid level stabilizes. Listen for abnormal pump noise indicating trapped air.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine splash shield using 10mm fasteners
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Perform final fluid level check with engine at operating temperature

Verification

  • Check all connections for leaks with engine running and while turning steering wheel lock-to-lock
  • Verify smooth steering operation without noise, binding, or unusual resistance
  • Confirm power steering fluid level is at the appropriate hot or cold mark
  • Inspect under vehicle for any drips or seepage after a short test drive
  • Re-verify that your vehicle configuration matches this procedure, as most 2019-2024 RAV4 2.5L FWD models use electric power steering without hydraulic components
