This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a seat heater element in the front seats of a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4, requiring partial seat disassembly and upholstery work.
Warnings
⚠Ensure the ignition is OFF and the vehicle has been sitting for at least 30 minutes to avoid burns from recently used seat heaters.
⚠Use care when removing upholstery to avoid tearing the seat cover material.
ℹ️Take photos during disassembly to ensure proper routing of wiring harnesses and clips during reassembly.
⚠️Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before beginning work to prevent airbag deployment if seat has side airbags.

Parts
- Seat heater element (driver or passenger specific) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Seat upholstery hog rings (if damaged during removal) × 10 — Use OEM specification
- Wire connector (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure seat heaters have not been used recently to avoid burns
- Open driver or passenger door fully and move seat to full rearward position for access
- Disconnect negative battery terminal using 10mm wrench and wait 90 seconds
- Gather all tools and replacement parts
- Take reference photos of seat from multiple angles
Procedure
- 1Remove Seat from VehicleMove the seat to the full forward position. Remove the plastic trim covers on the rear seat track mounting points. Using a 12mm socket, remove the two rear seat mounting bolts. Move the seat to the full rearward position. Remove the front seat track trim covers and remove the two front mounting bolts with a 12mm socket. Disconnect the electrical connectors under the seat (heater, occupant sensor, airbag if equipped). Carefully lift the seat out of the vehicle and place on a clean protected work surface.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 2Remove Seat Back CoversWith the seat on a work surface, locate the plastic trim panel on the rear of the seat back. Use trim removal tools to carefully pry off the rear seat back cover starting from the bottom edges. Remove any visible screws securing the panel using a T30 Torx driver. Disconnect any electrical connectors for lumbar support or other features as you remove the panel. Set the panel aside in a safe location.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 3Access Seat Cushion BottomFlip the seat upside down or position for access to the underside of the seat cushion. Locate and remove the dust cover or cardboard backing attached to the bottom of the seat cushion. This is typically held by plastic clips or staples. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry clips or remove staples without damaging the seat frame. Identify the heater element wiring harness routing from underneath.
- 4Remove Seat Cushion UpholsteryLocate the hog rings securing the seat upholstery to the seat frame around the perimeter of the cushion. Using hog ring pliers, carefully compress and remove each hog ring. Work systematically around the seat, taking note of hog ring locations. Once all hog rings are removed, carefully pull the upholstery away from the foam cushion. You may need to disconnect additional clips or fasteners. Take care not to tear the upholstery material.
- 5Test and Disconnect Failed Heater ElementWith the upholstery pulled back, locate the heater element embedded in or attached to the seat foam. The element will have a connector near the edge of the seat. Use a multimeter set to ohms to test the element resistance at the connector (should typically read 1-5 ohms for a functional element; infinite resistance indicates a break). Disconnect the heater element connector from the seat wiring harness. Note the routing path of the wiring through the foam.
- 6Remove Old Heater ElementCarefully peel or cut away the old heater element from the seat foam. If the element is adhesive-backed, work slowly to avoid tearing large chunks of foam. If the element is in a fabric pocket sewn into the cushion, you may need to open a seam to extract it. Remove all remnants of the old element and any damaged adhesive. Clean the foam surface where the new element will be installed.
- 7Install New Heater ElementPosition the new heater element on the seat foam following the manufacturer's orientation markings (if present). Ensure the element is centered and covers the appropriate seating area. If the element has adhesive backing, remove the protective film and carefully press the element onto the foam, working from center outward to avoid wrinkles or air pockets. If not self-adhesive, apply heat-resistant adhesive per manufacturer instructions. Route the element connector wire to the original exit point.
- 8Reconnect Heater Element WiringConnect the new heater element connector to the seat wiring harness. Ensure the connection is secure and properly seated. Use a multimeter to verify continuity through the new element (should read 1-5 ohms). Secure any loose wiring with zip ties or original clips to prevent chafing against the seat frame.
- 9Reinstall Seat UpholsteryCarefully position the seat upholstery back over the foam cushion, ensuring proper alignment with all original attachment points. Starting at the front of the seat, use hog ring pliers to install new or reuse existing hog rings to secure the upholstery to the seat frame. Work systematically around the perimeter, pulling the material taut but not overly tight. Ensure no wrinkles or bunching occur in the seating surface.
- 10Reinstall Dust Cover and Back PanelReattach the cardboard dust cover or backing to the bottom of the seat cushion using the original clips or new fasteners. Ensure all edges are secured. Reinstall the seat back trim panel, reconnecting any electrical connectors for lumbar or other features. Secure the panel with the original screws, torquing to specification.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall Seat in VehicleCarefully lift the seat and position it over the mounting points in the vehicle. Reconnect all electrical connectors under the seat (heater, occupant sensor, side airbag if equipped). Ensure connectors are fully seated and locked. Slide the seat to the full rearward position and install the front mounting bolts finger-tight. Move the seat to the full forward position and install the rear mounting bolts finger-tight. Torque all four mounting bolts to specification using a 12mm socket and torque wrench. Reinstall all seat track trim covers.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect Battery and TestReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Start the vehicle and allow it to complete any initialization procedures. Turn on the seat heater using the dashboard control and verify the indicator light illuminates. After 2-3 minutes, carefully feel the seat surface to confirm even heat distribution across the cushion. Check for any warning lights on the dashboard related to the seat systems.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are properly secured and locked in place
- Verify all seat mounting bolts are torqued to 27.0 Nm (20.0 lb-ft)
- Confirm all trim panels and covers are properly clipped and secured
- Test seat adjustment in all directions to ensure no interference with wiring
Verification
- Turn on the seat heater and verify the indicator light illuminates on the dashboard
- After 3-5 minutes of operation, feel the seat surface to confirm even heat distribution with no cold spots
- Move the seat through full range of adjustment (forward, back, recline) to ensure no binding or unusual noises
- Verify no airbag warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard
- Check that the occupant detection system functions properly (if equipped) by observing the passenger airbag indicator
- Use a multimeter to verify the heater element draws appropriate current (typically 3-5 amps at 12V)
