This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the steering wheel on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 gas engine, including safe airbag system disabling and proper steering wheel alignment.

Warnings

⚠️Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the negative battery terminal before working on airbag components to allow the airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.
⚠️Never strike the steering wheel or column during removal as this may deploy the airbag or damage the clockspring mechanism.
Always place the airbag module face-up on a clean, padded surface away from the work area. Never place it face-down.
The clockspring is fragile and must not be rotated with the steering wheel removed. Keep the front wheels pointed straight ahead and do not turn the clockspring.
ℹ️This vehicle uses Electric Power Steering (EPS) with no fluid, but a steering angle sensor calibration may be required after steering wheel replacement depending on the reason for removal.

Parts

  • Steering wheel (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and ensure front wheels are pointing straight ahead
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key or smart key from vehicle
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds minimum before proceeding
  4. Mark the exact position of the steering wheel on the column using a paint pen for proper reinstallation alignment
  5. Photograph or note the routing of all wiring connectors behind the steering wheel for reference

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Remove the lower steering column trim covers to access the underside of the steering column. There are typically two or three screws securing these covers. Carefully pull the covers apart once fasteners are removed, being mindful of any clips.
  2. 2
    Remove airbag module mounting bolts
From the rear of the steering wheel, locate the two Torx T30 airbag module mounting bolts. These are typically accessed through holes on either side of the steering wheel. Remove both bolts completely and keep them in a safe location.
Ensure 90 seconds have passed since battery disconnect before touching airbag components.
    Torque spec
    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  3. 3
Disconnect airbag connector and remove module
Carefully pull the airbag module toward you to release it from the steering wheel. Disconnect the yellow airbag connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight out. Disconnect the horn connector if equipped. Place the airbag module face-up on a clean, padded surface away from the work area.
⚠️Never carry the airbag by the wires or connector. Always place face-up in a safe location.
  4. 4
    Disconnect steering wheel electrical connectors
Locate and disconnect all electrical connectors behind the steering wheel. This typically includes the cruise control switches, paddle shifters (if equipped), audio controls, and any other steering wheel-mounted controls. Note the position and routing of each connector.
  5. 5
    Remove steering wheel retaining nut
Using a 19mm socket, remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Do not fully remove the nut yet; loosen it until it is flush with the end of the steering shaft to protect the threads during the next step.
    Torque spec
    Steering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove steering wheel from shaft
Install a proper steering wheel puller onto the steering wheel. Apply even pressure with the puller while keeping the nut loosely threaded to prevent the wheel from flying off. Once the wheel breaks free from the splined shaft, remove the nut completely and lift the steering wheel off. Take care not to rotate the clockspring beneath the wheel.
⚠️Do not strike the steering wheel with a hammer. Use only a proper steering wheel puller to avoid airbag deployment or clockspring damage.
Keep the front wheels straight and do not allow the clockspring to rotate once the wheel is removed.
  7. 7
    Inspect clockspring and splines
With the steering wheel removed, inspect the clockspring for any damage or misalignment. Verify it is centered and locked in place. Inspect the steering shaft splines for wear or damage. Clean the splines if necessary with a clean cloth.
  8. 8
    Install steering wheel onto shaft
Align the new or existing steering wheel with the alignment marks made during preparation. Ensure the wheels are still pointing straight ahead. Carefully slide the steering wheel onto the splined shaft, routing all wiring through the appropriate channels. Ensure the clockspring connector is properly positioned.
  9. 9
Install and torque steering wheel nut
Install the steering wheel retaining nut and hand-tighten. Using a torque wrench, tighten the nut to the specified torque value. Verify the steering wheel is properly seated and aligned with your reference marks.

  10. 10
    Reconnect steering wheel electrical connectors
Reconnect all steering wheel electrical connectors in their proper positions, including cruise control, audio controls, paddle shifters, and any other switches. Ensure all connectors click into place and wiring is not pinched.
  11. 11
    Reinstall airbag module
Reconnect the horn connector (if equipped) and the yellow airbag connector. Ensure the connector locks fully into place. Carefully position the airbag module onto the steering wheel, aligning the mounting holes. Install both Torx T30 bolts and torque to specification in the sequence recommended by the service manual (typically alternating pattern).
Ensure airbag connector is fully seated with locking tab engaged before installing module.

    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall steering column covers
Reinstall the lower steering column trim covers, ensuring all clips are properly engaged. Install and tighten any screws that were removed. Verify covers are secure and properly aligned.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine. The airbag warning light should illuminate briefly then extinguish. If the light remains on, diagnose and clear any stored codes. Start the engine and verify all steering wheel functions operate correctly.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked in place
  2. Ensure steering wheel alignment matches the pre-removal reference marks with wheels straight ahead
  3. Confirm airbag module is securely mounted with both bolts torqued to specification
  4. Check that no wiring is pinched or improperly routed behind the steering wheel

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON and verify the airbag warning light extinguishes after the initial bulb check (approximately 6 seconds)
  • Test all steering wheel-mounted controls including horn, cruise control, audio controls, and paddle shifters if equipped
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
  • Test drive the vehicle and verify proper steering response and that the steering wheel is centered when driving straight
  • If steering angle sensor warning appears or steering feels abnormal, perform steering angle sensor calibration using a capable scan tool per Toyota service procedures
