Parts
- Transmission Control Module × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Dielectric grease × 1 — Small packet
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Gather all tools and new TCM in sealed packaging
Procedure
- 1Access transmission control module locationThe TCM is located on the driver's side of the transmission case. From under the hood, identify the TCM mounted to the side of the transmission bell housing area. You may need to remove the air intake duct for better access by loosening the clamps at both ends and lifting it away.
- 2Remove TCM heat shield or coverRemove any protective heat shield or cover over the TCM. This is typically held by 2-3 bolts or clips. Set cover aside for reinstallation.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect primary electrical connectorLocate the large multi-pin electrical connector on the TCM. Press down on the locking tab or slide the connector lock to the unlock position. Carefully pull the connector straight out from the TCM without twisting. Inspect connector pins for any corrosion or damage.
- 4Disconnect secondary electrical connector if equippedSome TCM configurations have a second smaller connector. Release the locking mechanism and disconnect this connector as well. Keep track of which connector goes to which port.
- 5Remove TCM mounting boltsRemove the mounting bolts securing the TCM to the transmission case. There are typically 2-3 bolts. Support the TCM with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 6Remove old TCMCarefully pull the TCM away from the transmission housing. Note the orientation and positioning of any alignment pins or dowels. Inspect the mounting surface on the transmission for any debris or damage.
- 7Prepare new TCM for installationRemove new TCM from packaging only when ready to install. Verify part number matches the original unit. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector seals (not the pins) to aid in moisture protection.
- 8Install new TCMPosition the new TCM onto the transmission housing, aligning any dowel pins or locating features. Ensure the module sits flush against the mounting surface before inserting bolts. Hand-thread all mounting bolts before tightening.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect the electrical connectors to the new TCM in the correct positions. Push each connector firmly until you hear or feel a positive click. Ensure locking tabs are fully engaged. Verify connectors are secure by gently pulling on them.
- 10Reinstall heat shield and componentsReinstall the TCM heat shield or cover. Reinstall the air intake duct if it was removed, ensuring clamps are tight. Double-check that all connectors are secure and no tools or parts are left in the engine bay.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect battery and perform TCM initializationReconnect the negative battery cable. Using a professional scan tool, perform TCM initialization and programming according to Toyota procedures. This step is mandatory and requires VIN-specific software. The TCM must learn transmission adaptation values before normal operation is possible.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify all mounting bolts are torqued to specification
- Confirm air intake system is properly reinstalled and sealed
- Reset power windows and radio settings as needed after battery reconnection
Verification
- Start engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated on dashboard
- Using scan tool, verify TCM communication is established and no DTCs are present
- Perform test drive including all gear shifts from Park through Drive and Reverse
- Verify smooth shifting in all gears and proper engagement of lock-up clutch
- Re-scan for codes after test drive to confirm successful installation
- Allow transmission to complete adaptation learning over 20-30 miles of varied driving
