This procedure covers draining and refilling the automatic transmission fluid on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 engine, including proper refill procedure and level verification.

Warnings

Perform this service with the transmission at normal operating temperature (after driving 5-10 minutes) for accurate fluid level checking, but allow 10-15 minutes of cooling before draining to avoid scalding.
Using incorrect ATF will damage the transmission. Only use genuine Toyota WS ATF or exact equivalent meeting Toyota WS specification.
ℹ️This is a drain-and-fill procedure, not a complete flush. Approximately 4-4.5 quarts will drain; the remaining fluid stays in the torque converter and valve body.

Parts

  • Transmission drain plug crush washer × 1 — Toyota 90430-12031 or equivalent

Fluids

  • Toyota WS ATF — 4.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Warm the transmission by driving the vehicle for 5-10 minutes, then allow to cool for 10-15 minutes
  2. Park on level ground and apply parking brake
  3. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  4. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
  5. Verify you have the correct Toyota WS ATF fluid before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access transmission drain plug
Locate the transmission drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. It is a 10mm hex bolt located toward the front-center of the pan. Clean the area around the drain plug to prevent contamination.
  2. 2
    Drain transmission fluid
Position drain pan beneath the transmission drain plug. Slowly remove the drain plug using a 10mm socket. Allow fluid to drain completely until flow stops, approximately 5-10 minutes. Inspect the drained fluid for metal particles or burnt smell indicating potential transmission issues.
Transmission fluid will be hot. Wear gloves and ensure adequate cooling time to avoid burns.
  3. 3
Install drain plug with new washer
Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and discard. Install the new crush washer onto the drain plug. Thread the drain plug into the transmission pan by hand to prevent cross-threading, then torque to specification.

  4. 4
    Lower vehicle for refill
Lower the vehicle from jack stands to ground level. The vehicle must be level for accurate fluid refill. Ensure the transmission is in Park and parking brake is engaged.
  5. 5
    Add transmission fluid
Locate the transmission dipstick tube in the engine bay (red or yellow handle near the firewall on driver side). Remove the dipstick. Using a funnel, add 4.0 quarts of Toyota WS ATF through the dipstick tube. Pour slowly to avoid spillage and allow fluid to settle.
  6. 6
    Check initial fluid level
With the engine off, insert the dipstick fully and remove to check the level. The fluid should register on the cold range of the dipstick. Add additional fluid in 0.25 quart increments if needed, but do not overfill at this stage.
  7. 7
Run through gears and warm transmission
Start the engine and allow to idle. With foot firmly on the brake, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) pausing 3-5 seconds in each position. Return to Park. Allow the engine to idle for 3-5 minutes to bring transmission to operating temperature.
  8. 8
Final fluid level check and adjustment
With the engine running at idle and transmission in Park on level ground, remove the dipstick and wipe clean. Reinsert fully, then remove and check level. Fluid should be in the HOT range between the two dots or hash marks. Add fluid in small increments (0.1-0.2 quarts) if below the lower mark, recheck after each addition. Do not overfill above the upper mark.
Overfilling the transmission can cause foaming, erratic shifting, and potential damage. Add fluid conservatively and recheck frequently.
  9. 9
    Verify for leaks
With engine running, inspect the drain plug area for any signs of leakage. If leaking, shut off engine, raise vehicle, and verify drain plug torque specification was met. Check area again after test drive.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure dipstick is fully seated in the tube
  2. Verify no tools or materials were left in engine bay or under vehicle
  3. Clean any spilled transmission fluid from engine bay or chassis components

Verification

  • Test drive the vehicle for 10-15 minutes, including highway speeds if possible, to circulate fresh fluid
  • After test drive, recheck fluid level with engine running, transmission hot, on level ground - level should remain in HOT range
  • Verify smooth shifting through all gears with no slipping or harsh engagement
  • Inspect drain plug area one final time for any seepage or leaks
  • Record the mileage and date of service for maintenance tracking
