Drain and refill transmission fluid on 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 2.5L I4 FWD using the drain and fill method to maintain transmission longevity.

Warnings

Transmission fluid can be extremely hot if engine has been running recently. Allow vehicle to cool for at least 2 hours before service.
Never use non-WS transmission fluid in this transmission. Using incorrect fluid will cause transmission damage and void warranty.
ℹ️This is a drain and refill service, not a complete flush. Only 4-5 quarts will drain; this is normal for this procedure.
ℹ️Vehicle must be on level ground when checking fluid level to ensure accurate reading.

Parts

  • Transmission drain plug crush washer × 1 — 90430-12031 or equivalent

Fluids

  • Toyota WS ATF — 4.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Ensure transmission fluid is warm but not hot (ideal temp is 100-120°F)
  4. Gather all tools and new crush washer before starting
  5. Have 5 quarts of Toyota WS ATF ready

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise and support vehicle
Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at designated front jacking point. Support vehicle securely on jack stands at proper frame support points. Remove both front wheels.
  2. 2
    Locate transmission drain plug
Position yourself under the vehicle and locate the transmission oil pan on the front-passenger side of the engine. The drain plug is a 17mm hex bolt located at the lowest point of the transmission pan. Clean the area around the drain plug with shop towels to prevent contamination.
  3. 3
    Drain transmission fluid
Position drain pan directly under the drain plug with adequate capacity. Using a 17mm socket, slowly loosen the drain plug. Once loose, carefully remove by hand, allowing fluid to drain. Keep the old crush washer - do not allow it to fall into the drain pan. Allow fluid to drain completely until flow stops (approximately 10-15 minutes).
Fluid may drain with moderate pressure initially. Keep hands clear of the stream to avoid burns if fluid is warm.
  4. 4
    Inspect drained fluid
Examine the drained fluid for metal particles, excessive debris, or burnt smell. Dark brown or black fluid with burnt odor indicates potential transmission problems. Normal fluid should be red to dark red. Check drain plug magnet for excessive metal shavings.
  5. 5
Install drain plug with new washer
Remove old crush washer from drain plug and discard. Install new crush washer onto drain plug. Clean the drain plug threads and the pan sealing surface with a shop towel. Thread drain plug by hand to ensure proper thread engagement, then tighten to specification using torque wrench.

  6. 6
    Access transmission fill port
Lower vehicle slightly if needed for better access. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick/fill tube on the passenger side of the engine bay. It has a yellow or orange loop handle and is labeled 'ATF'. Remove the dipstick completely and wipe clean. Insert funnel with long flexible spout into the dipstick tube.
  7. 7
    Refill transmission fluid
Pour 4.0 quarts of fresh Toyota WS ATF through the funnel slowly to prevent overflow. Allow fluid to settle for 2-3 minutes. Add an additional 0.25 quarts at a time, checking level with dipstick between additions. The goal is to match the amount drained (typically 4.0-4.5 quarts total).
Do not overfill. Overfilling can cause transmission damage, foaming, and erratic shifting.
  8. 8
    Reinstall wheels
Install both front wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts. Lower vehicle until wheels just touch the ground but vehicle weight is still on jack stands. Torque lug nuts in star pattern to specification. Fully lower vehicle and remove jack stands.

  9. 9
    Check fluid level cold
With engine off and vehicle on level ground, remove dipstick and wipe clean. Reinsert fully, then remove and check level. Fluid should be between the two lower dots marked 'COLD'. Add fluid in 0.1 quart increments if needed.
  10. 10
Warm up and verify fluid level
Start engine and allow to idle. With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) pausing 3 seconds in each position. Return to Park. Allow engine to idle for 3-5 minutes to reach normal operating temperature (160-180°F). With engine running and transmission at operating temperature, check fluid level. Fluid should be in the 'HOT' range on dipstick. Add fluid if necessary to bring to proper level.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure dipstick is fully seated after final fluid level check
  2. Verify no fluid leaks are present around drain plug
  3. Dispose of used transmission fluid at proper recycling facility
  4. Record mileage and date of service for maintenance records

Verification

  • No transmission fluid leaks visible under vehicle after test drive
  • Transmission shifts smoothly through all gears without delay or harshness
  • Fluid level reads in proper 'HOT' range on dipstick when at operating temperature
  • Transmission operates normally with no warning lights on dashboard
  • Test drive vehicle for 10-15 minutes, cycling through all gears to verify proper operation
