Warnings
⚠️Perform this service with engine completely cold. Hot engine components can cause severe burns.
⚠The 2019-2024 RAV4 2.5L engine requires iridium spark plugs. Do not substitute with standard copper plugs as this will cause engine damage and poor performance.
⚠Over-torquing spark plugs can strip threads in aluminum cylinder head. Use torque wrench and follow specifications exactly.
ℹ️This procedure applies to the A25A-FKS engine (non-hybrid models). Hybrid RAV4 models require different procedures.

Procedure
- 1Remove engine cover and air intake systemRemove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the four corner clips. Loosen the air intake duct clamp at the throttle body using a flathead screwdriver. Disconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector by pressing the release tab. Remove the air box mounting clips and lift the entire air box assembly out of the engine bay.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Replace engine air filterOpen the air box housing by releasing the clips on both sides. Remove the old air filter element and inspect the housing for debris or contamination. Clean housing if necessary with a dry cloth. Install the new air filter ensuring it seats properly in the housing grooves. Close the air box and secure the clips.
- 3Replace cabin air filterOpen the glove box and remove contents. Squeeze both sides of the glove box inward to release the damper arms and lower the glove box fully. Remove the cabin air filter cover by pressing the tabs on both sides. Slide out the old cabin air filter noting the airflow direction arrows. Install new cabin air filter with airflow arrows pointing in the correct direction (typically toward the back of vehicle). Reinstall cover and glove box.
- 4Disconnect ignition coilsLocate the four ignition coils on top of the engine. Press the locking tab on each coil electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. Remove the 10mm bolt securing each coil pack. Carefully wiggle and pull each coil straight up out of the spark plug wells. Inspect coil boots for damage or oil contamination.⚠If oil is present in spark plug wells, valve cover gasket replacement is needed to prevent future ignition problems.
- 5Remove old spark plugsUsing compressed air or a clean cloth, carefully clean around each spark plug well to prevent debris from falling into cylinders. Insert the 5/8" spark plug socket with extension into each well. Turn counterclockwise to remove each spark plug. Inspect old plugs for abnormal wear, oil fouling, or incorrect gap which may indicate engine issues.⚠️Never drop anything into open spark plug holes. Foreign objects will cause catastrophic engine damage.
- 6Install new spark plugsVerify new spark plugs are pre-gapped to 0.039-0.043 inches (1.0-1.1mm) specification. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads (optional but recommended). Hand thread each spark plug carefully to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use torque wrench to tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). If no torque wrench available, tighten 1/16 turn past snug for new plugs.⚠Cross-threading spark plugs will destroy cylinder head threads requiring expensive repair. Always start by hand and ensure smooth threading.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 7Reinstall ignition coilsApply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the inside of each coil boot. Align each coil with its spark plug and push firmly until it seats completely. Install and hand-tighten the 10mm mounting bolt on each coil, then torque to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft). Reconnect each coil electrical connector until it clicks into place.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 8Drain engine oilPosition oil drain pan under the oil drain plug located on the passenger side of the oil pan. Using a 14mm socket, loosen the drain plug and remove by hand once loose (oil will flow quickly). Allow oil to drain completely for at least 5 minutes. Inspect drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage. Remove old crush washer from drain plug and discard.⚠Engine oil may still be warm even after cooling period. Avoid direct skin contact with used engine oil.
- 9Install drain plug with new washerInstall new crush washer onto the oil drain plug. Thread the drain plug by hand into the oil pan to ensure proper threading. Once hand-tight, use torque wrench to tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft). Do not over-tighten as this may strip the aluminum oil pan threads.⚠Always use a new crush washer. Reusing old washers will result in oil leaks.Torque specOil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 10Replace oil filterLocate the oil filter on the front passenger side of the engine (accessible from below). Position drain pan under filter. Using oil filter wrench, turn filter counterclockwise to remove. Allow residual oil to drain. Clean the filter mounting surface on the engine block. Apply a thin film of fresh engine oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter. Thread new filter by hand clockwise until gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand only.ℹ️Do not use oil filter wrench to install new filter. Hand-tightening only prevents gasket damage and over-tightening.
- 11Add fresh engine oilRemove the oil filler cap located on top of the valve cover. Insert funnel and add 4.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil. Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle, then check dipstick level. Add remaining oil in small increments until level reaches the upper mark on dipstick (typically between 4.7-5.0 quarts total). Install oil filler cap hand-tight.
- 12Reinstall air intake systemPosition the air box assembly back into place in the engine bay. Secure the mounting clips to the specified torque. Reconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector until it clicks. Attach the air intake duct to the throttle body and tighten the clamp securely. Reinstall the engine cover by pressing down firmly on all four corners until clips engage.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Start engine and check for leaksLower vehicle from jack stands if raised. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Immediately check under vehicle for oil leaks at drain plug and filter. Check around spark plug wells and ignition coils for proper seating. Allow engine to reach operating temperature (typically 5-10 minutes). The maintenance required light will illuminate; this is normal and will be reset in the next step.⚠️If oil pressure warning light remains illuminated or engine makes unusual noises, shut off immediately and investigate.
- 14Reset maintenance reminderTurn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Ensure odometer is displayed (not Trip A or B). Turn ignition OFF. Press and hold the odometer reset button while turning ignition to ON position. Continue holding button until maintenance light begins flashing, then goes out (approximately 10-15 seconds). Release button and turn ignition OFF. Verify reset by turning ignition back ON and confirming maintenance light is no longer illuminated.
