Parts

  • Spark plugs × 4 — Toyota 90919-01253 or equivalent iridium (qty 4)
  • Engine air filter × 1 — Toyota 17801-0P051 or equivalent
  • Cabin air filter × 1 — Toyota 87139-02090 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine has been off for at least 2 hours and is completely cold
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
  3. Gather all tools, parts, and supplies before beginning
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove engine cover and air box
Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the front edge to release the clips. Release the clips securing the air box lid and disconnect the air intake duct. Remove the air box lid to access the air filter.

    Air Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Replace engine air filter
Remove the old engine air filter from the air box housing. Inspect the housing for debris and clean if necessary. Install the new air filter ensuring proper orientation with the arrow pointing toward the engine. Reinstall the air box lid and secure all clips.
    Torque spec
    Air Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Replace cabin air filter
Open the glove box and remove contents. Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward to release the stops and lower it fully. Remove the cabin air filter access cover by pressing the tabs. Slide out the old cabin air filter, noting the airflow direction arrow. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing in the correct direction, reinstall the cover, and restore the glove box to normal position.
  4. 4
    Remove ignition coils
Disconnect the electrical connector from each ignition coil by pressing the release tab. Remove the 10mm bolt securing each ignition coil. Carefully pull each coil straight out of the spark plug tube. Mark or remember cylinder positions (1-4, left to right when facing engine).
Pull ignition coils straight out without twisting to avoid damaging the rubber boot seal.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove old spark plugs
Use compressed air or a clean cloth to remove any debris from around the spark plug wells to prevent contamination. Using a 14mm spark plug socket with extension, carefully remove each spark plug by turning counterclockwise. Keep plugs organized by cylinder for inspection.
Avoid dropping anything into the spark plug tubes as debris can enter the combustion chamber.
  6. 6
    Inspect old spark plugs
Examine the electrode wear, color, and condition of each plug. Normal plugs should have light tan/gray deposits. Heavy deposits, oil fouling, or excessive electrode wear may indicate engine issues requiring further diagnosis. Note any abnormalities.
  7. 7
    Install new spark plugs
Check the gap on new spark plugs (should be pre-gapped to 0.043 inches). Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads if desired (avoid getting any on the electrode). Hand-thread each plug into the cylinder head, being careful not to cross-thread. Tighten to 18 lb-ft (24 Nm) using a torque wrench.
Cross-threading spark plugs can severely damage aluminum cylinder head threads requiring expensive repair.
  8. 8
    Reinstall ignition coils
Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the inside of each ignition coil boot if available. Carefully push each coil down into the spark plug tube until fully seated. Install the 10mm mounting bolt and torque to specification. Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks into place.

    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Inspect and top off fluids
Check engine oil level using the dipstick with engine cold. Top off with Toyota Genuine 0W-20 if needed to reach the full mark. Check coolant level in the overflow reservoir (should be between MIN and MAX when cold). Inspect brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Check windshield washer fluid and fill if low.
  10. 10
    Visual inspection
Inspect all accessible belts for cracks, fraying, or glazing. Check all visible hoses for cracks, softness, or leaks. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and ensure connections are tight. Look for any fluid leaks on engine or underneath vehicle.
  11. 11
    Reinstall engine cover
Align the engine cover mounting points with the grommets on the engine. Press down firmly on each mounting point until the cover clicks into place and is securely seated.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify engine cover is properly secured at all mounting points
  3. Confirm air box lid and all clips are properly fastened
  4. Double-check that no tools or parts were left in the engine bay

Verification

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth, even idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify no warning lights are illuminated
  • Check for any unusual noises, vibrations, or leaks while engine is running
  • Turn engine off and verify all fluid levels remain correct
  • Test drive vehicle to confirm normal acceleration and performance
