This procedure replaces the turn signal switch (combination switch) on the steering column of a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds before beginning work to allow the airbag system to discharge.
⚠Do not rotate the steering wheel with the column disconnected, as this may damage the airbag clock spring.
ℹ️Keep the steering wheel centered and locked in the straight-ahead position throughout this procedure.

Parts
- Turn signal switch assembly (combination switch) × 1 — Toyota OEM 84140-42140 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Center the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds minimum
- Adjust steering column to lowest position for easier access
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate the two Phillips screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover. Remove these screws and carefully pull the lower cover downward and away from the column.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the two Phillips screws securing the upper steering column cover. Remove these screws. Gently lift and tilt the upper cover forward to disengage the clips at the rear, then remove it from the column.
- 3Locate turn signal switch connectorIdentify the large multipin electrical connector on the back of the turn signal switch assembly. This connector is typically gray or black and located on the left side of the steering column.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the turn signal switch connector and carefully pull it straight out from the switch assembly. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
- 5Remove switch mounting screwsLocate the two or three Phillips screws securing the turn signal switch assembly to the steering column bracket. These screws are typically positioned on the sides and bottom of the switch housing. Remove all mounting screws completely.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Remove turn signal switch assemblyCarefully slide the turn signal switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may need to be tilted slightly to clear the column shaft. Remove the assembly completely from the vehicle.
- 7Install new turn signal switchPosition the new turn signal switch assembly onto the steering column bracket, ensuring proper alignment with the mounting holes. Slide it into position, being careful not to pinch any wiring.
- 8Install switch mounting screwsInstall all switch mounting screws and tighten them in a cross pattern to the specified torque of 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as the plastic housing can crack.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the receptacle on the back of the turn signal switch. Push firmly until you hear and feel a positive click, confirming the locking tab has engaged.
- 10Reinstall upper steering column coverPosition the upper steering column cover over the column, engaging the rear clips first. Install the two Phillips screws and tighten to 2.0 Nm (1.5 lb-ft).Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall lower steering column coverPosition the lower steering column cover and align it with the upper cover. Install the two Phillips screws and tighten to 2.0 Nm (1.5 lb-ft).Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal. The vehicle may need to have windows, sunroof, and other systems reinitialized according to owner's manual procedures.
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps
- Verify electrical connector is fully locked with no exposed pins
- Confirm steering wheel remains centered after reassembly
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify all turn signal indicator lights illuminate on the instrument cluster
- Test left turn signal lever function - verify front and rear lights flash
- Test right turn signal lever function - verify front and rear lights flash
- Test hazard light function - verify all four corners flash simultaneously
- Test high beam and low beam flash-to-pass function
- Test windshield wiper controls if integrated into the switch assembly
- Verify no airbag warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard
- Check that turn signal lever returns to center position automatically after turning
