This procedure covers removal and replacement of the water pump on the 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.5L I4 gasoline engine, including coolant system drainage, pump access, and refill procedures.
Warnings
⚠️Never open cooling system when engine is hot. System operates under pressure and can cause severe burns.
⚠Coolant is toxic to pets and children. Clean up all spills immediately and dispose of used coolant properly.
⚠The 2.5L engine in this application has the water pump accessible from the front without timing chain removal, but verify your specific engine configuration before proceeding.
ℹ️This procedure assumes standard water pump configuration. Hybrid models require different procedures.

Parts
- Water pump assembly × 1 — 16100-0P012 or equivalent OEM
- Water pump gasket/O-ring kit × 1 — Included with pump or separate
- Coolant drain plug O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 10 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold (at least 2 hours after last operation)
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands
- Remove engine under cover/splash shield using 10mm socket
- Place large drain pan beneath radiator drain plug location
- Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent cooling fan activation
Procedure
- 1Drain cooling systemRemove radiator cap slowly to release any residual pressure. Locate the radiator drain plug at the bottom of the radiator on the driver's side. Remove the drain plug and allow coolant to drain completely into drain pan. Remove the coolant reservoir cap to allow air in and facilitate drainage. Once drained, reinstall drain plug with new O-ring.
- 2Remove serpentine drive beltLocate the automatic belt tensioner on the front of the engine. Using a 14mm socket or belt tensioner tool, rotate the tensioner clockwise to release belt tension. Slip the belt off the pulleys and slowly release tensioner. Remove belt completely and inspect for wear or damage.
- 3Disconnect coolant hosesIdentify the coolant hoses connected to the water pump (typically one lower radiator hose connection and one bypass hose). Use pliers to compress and slide hose clamps away from the pump connections. Gently twist and pull hoses off pump nipples. Have shop towels ready to catch residual coolant. Inspect hoses for cracks or deterioration.
- 4Remove water pump mounting boltsLocate all water pump mounting bolts (typically 5-6 bolts depending on configuration). Remove bolts in a criss-cross pattern using a 12mm socket. Keep bolts organized by location as they may be different lengths. Note the position of any brackets or ground straps attached to pump bolts.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 5Remove water pump assemblyCarefully pull the water pump away from the engine block. It may be stuck due to gasket seal. Gently tap around the pump housing with a plastic mallet if needed, being careful not to damage the mating surface on the engine block. Remove the pump and old gasket material.
- 6Clean mating surfacesUse a plastic gasket scraper to thoroughly clean all old gasket material from the engine block mating surface. Ensure surface is completely clean and free of debris. Inspect the mating surface for damage, scoring, or warping. Clean the area with shop towels and brake cleaner. Do not use metal scrapers that could damage the aluminum surface.
- 7Prepare new water pumpUnbox new water pump and verify it matches the old unit in bolt pattern and hose connections. Install new O-ring or gasket onto the new pump per manufacturer instructions. Some pumps come with gasket pre-installed, others require separate installation. Apply a thin film of coolant to the O-ring to aid installation. Do not use gasket sealer unless specifically required by pump manufacturer.
- 8Install new water pumpCarefully position the new water pump onto the engine block, aligning the gasket and all bolt holes. Start all mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement and alignment. Once all bolts are started, tighten them in a criss-cross pattern to the specified torque of 25.0 Nm (18 lb-ft). Reattach any brackets or ground straps removed during disassembly.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect coolant hosesSlide coolant hoses onto the water pump connections, ensuring they are fully seated. Position hose clamps over the hose connection area and tighten to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft) using a small torque wrench or tighten securely by hand. Verify hoses are routed correctly without kinks or interference with moving parts.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall serpentine beltRoute the serpentine belt around all pulleys following the belt routing diagram (typically found on a decal in the engine bay). Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise and slip the belt onto the final pulley. Slowly release tensioner to apply proper tension. Verify belt is seated correctly in all pulley grooves.
- 11Refill cooling systemUsing a funnel, pour Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) into the radiator until full. Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line. Install radiator cap. Reconnect negative battery terminal. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature with the heater on full hot to purge air from the system. Monitor coolant level and add as needed. Check for leaks around water pump and hose connections.
- 12Bleed cooling systemWith engine at operating temperature and heater on high, squeeze upper radiator hose several times to help release trapped air. Turn engine off and allow to cool. Once cool, check coolant level in both radiator and reservoir, topping off as necessary. Repeat warm-up and cool-down cycle one more time to ensure all air is purged from the system.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine under cover and splash shields using original fasteners
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Perform final visual inspection of all connections and fasteners
- Verify no tools or materials are left in engine bay
Verification
- Start engine and verify no coolant leaks from water pump, hoses, or connections
- Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature and verify cooling fan cycles properly
- Check that heater produces hot air at normal operating temperature
- Monitor coolant level in reservoir over the next few days and top off if needed
- Check for proper serpentine belt operation with no squealing or slipping
- Test drive vehicle and monitor temperature gauge for normal operation
- Recheck all connections after first 50 miles of driving
