The 2008 V70 is plagued by catastrophic engine failures on the 3.2L I6 (low-pressure turbo models less affected), alongside typical Volvo electrical gremlins and transmission cooler issues that can destroy the gearbox if ignored.
3.2L I6 Catastrophic Piston/Cylinder Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Sudden excessive oil consumption (1qt per 500-1000 miles), Blue smoke on cold start or heavy acceleration, Metallic knocking from block, loss of compression, CEL with misfire codes (P0300 series)
Fix: Complete engine rebuild or replacement required. Piston skirts crack, scoring cylinders beyond honing limits. Expect 25-35 labor hours for rebuilt longblock swap, slightly less if remanufactured unit drops in cleanly. No band-aid fix exists.
Estimated cost: $6,500-9,500
Transmission Oil Cooler Internal Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Pink or milky transmission fluid on dipstick, Coolant level drops without external leaks, Harsh shifting or slipping after coolant/ATF cross-contamination, Transmission overheat warnings on dash
Fix: Factory oil cooler inside radiator corrodes, allowing coolant and ATF to mix. Requires radiator replacement, full transmission flush (often multiple cycles), new fluid and filter. If caught early, 4-6 hours labor. If delayed and transmission is damaged, add rebuild at 18-25 hours.
Symptoms: Clunk when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Vibration through cabin at idle in gear, Visible engine/trans movement from engine bay during hard acceleration, Torque steer or pull under throttle
Fix: Upper transmission mount tears or oil-soaks and collapses. Access requires removing airbox and battery tray on most models. 2.5-3.5 hours labor for upper mount; sometimes lower mount also done preventively.
Estimated cost: $400-650
CEM (Central Electronic Module) Moisture Intrusion
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Intermittent no-start, starter won't engage, Random electrical failures: windows, wipers, HVAC blower, gauges, Interior lights staying on, battery drain overnight, Water pooling in passenger footwell near firewall
Fix: CEM located in passenger kick panel. Sunroof drains clog or cowl seal fails, dripping water onto module. Requires CEM removal, inspection for corrosion, often replacement and VIN programming. Some can be dried/cleaned if caught early. 3-5 hours labor plus tow programming time.
Symptoms: Oil in intake hoses or throttle body, Rough idle, hesitation under load, Whistling or hissing from valve cover area, Oil cap pops off or excessive crankcase pressure
Fix: PCV breather box (oil trap) clogs with sludge, especially if oil change intervals were stretched. Requires valve cover removal, replacement of oil trap assembly, cleaning intake tract. 3-5 hours labor depending on accessibility and extent of cleaning needed.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Angle Gear (AWD Transfer Case) Seal and Bearing Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Whining or growling from rear differential area, speed-dependent, Fluid leak at rear of transmission where driveshaft connects, Vibration during acceleration, worse on turns, AWD warning light on dash
Fix: Angle gear (bevel gear coupling AWD system) develops seal leaks and bearing wear. Requires transmission drop or partial disassembly to access. Overhaul or replacement needed. 6-9 hours labor for seal/bearing service, more if unit needs replacement.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,200
Owner tips
Change oil every 5,000 miles maximum with quality synthetic to delay (not prevent) 3.2L piston failure—it's a when, not if
Inspect transmission fluid color every oil change; pink or milky means immediate cooler replacement to save the transmission
Replace PCV oil trap and clean intake system every 60k miles preventively
Check sunroof drains annually and clear cowl area of leaves to prevent CEM water damage
Budget $1,000/year in reserves for unexpected electrical and drivetrain repairs beyond normal maintenance
Avoid the 3.2L I6 models entirely—engine grenades are inevitable; low-pressure turbo variants are marginally better but still need rigorous maintenance and deep pockets for when things break.

Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2008-2016 V70 and XC70, 2007-2016 S80, 2011-2018 S60 and V60, 2016-2018 S60 Cross Country, 2014-2020 S60L, 2009-2015 S80L, 2009-2016 XC60 and 2015-2018 V60 Cross Country vehicles. The flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue over time, causing the seat belt to not secure the occupant in the event of a crash.
Consequence: An unsecured occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat belt anchor cable for both front seats. The recall began December 10, 2020. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R10029.
