Replace the ABS tone ring on the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, which requires removing the wheel hub assembly to access and replace the damaged or worn tone ring.

Warnings

Ensure vehicle is completely stable on jack stands before working underneath. The battery in this EV adds significant weight.
Do not damage the ABS wheel speed sensor during removal. Contamination or physical damage will cause ABS faults.
ℹ️ABS tone rings may be integrated into the hub bearing assembly on some configurations. Verify before ordering parts.
⚠️Disconnect 12V battery before beginning work to prevent accidental short circuits or ABS system faults.

Parts

  • ABS tone ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Wheel bearing hub assembly (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  3. Loosen wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
  4. Raise vehicle with floor jack and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer lift points
  5. Remove wheel completely
  6. Clean wheel hub area with brake cleaner to remove road debris

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove brake caliper assembly
Remove the caliper bolts securing the brake caliper to the bracket. Support the caliper with wire or a bungee cord - do not let it hang by the brake hose. Do not disconnect brake lines unless absolutely necessary.
    Torque spec
    Caliper Bolts88 Nm (65 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove brake caliper bracket
Remove the two caliper bracket bolts that secure the bracket to the steering knuckle. Remove the brake rotor by pulling it off the hub studs. If rotor is stuck, use penetrating oil and light tapping with a rubber mallet.
    Torque spec
    Bracket Bolts102 Nm (75 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Disconnect ABS wheel speed sensor
Locate the ABS wheel speed sensor electrical connector near the wheel well. Carefully disconnect the connector by pressing the release tab. Remove the sensor mounting bolt and carefully extract the sensor from the knuckle or hub. Clean the sensor tip with brake cleaner.
Do not pull on the sensor wire. Damage to the sensor will require replacement and recalibration.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove hub bearing assembly bolts
Remove the bolts securing the wheel hub bearing assembly to the steering knuckle from the back side. Access may require turning the steering wheel for clearance. Note the bolt locations and any alignment marks.
    Torque spec
    Bracket Bolts102 Nm (75 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove hub assembly
Using a hub puller or press, carefully remove the hub bearing assembly from the steering knuckle. If resistance is encountered, apply penetrating oil and allow to soak. Do not damage the knuckle mounting surfaces or ABS sensor bore.
Inspect the hub bearing for damage or excessive play. If bearing is worn, replace the entire hub assembly.
  6. 6
    Remove old ABS tone ring
If the tone ring is separate from the hub assembly, carefully pry or press it off the hub. Some tone rings are pressed on and require a bearing separator tool. Inspect the hub surface for corrosion or damage. Clean thoroughly with wire brush and brake cleaner.
ℹ️On some Bolt EUV configurations, the tone ring is integrated into the hub bearing assembly and cannot be replaced separately. Verify your specific configuration.
  7. 7
    Install new ABS tone ring
Align the new ABS tone ring onto the hub assembly with the teeth facing outward toward the sensor. Press the tone ring onto the hub using a bearing press or appropriate driver tool. Ensure the ring is fully seated and square to the hub face. Check that there is no wobble or misalignment.
Do not hammer the tone ring directly. Use a proper driver tool that contacts the inner ring only to avoid bending or damaging the teeth.
  8. 8
    Reinstall hub bearing assembly
Clean the knuckle mounting surface and hub mating surface. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize to the knuckle bore (avoid ABS sensor area). Install the hub assembly into the knuckle, ensuring proper alignment. Thread all mounting bolts by hand first.
    Torque spec
    Bracket Bolts102 Nm (75 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reinstall ABS wheel speed sensor
Clean the ABS sensor bore in the knuckle/hub with brake cleaner. Apply a thin coat of high-temperature bearing grease to the sensor O-ring if equipped. Insert the sensor carefully into the bore until fully seated. Install the mounting bolt and torque to specification. Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Verify proper air gap between sensor tip and tone ring teeth (typically 0.5-1.5mm). Incorrect gap will cause ABS faults.

    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reinstall brake components
Reinstall the brake rotor onto the hub. Clean caliper bracket mounting surfaces and apply thread locker to caliper bracket bolts. Install bracket and torque bolts to specification. Reinstall caliper over rotor and pads, apply thread locker to caliper bolts, and torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Bracket Bolts102 Nm (75 lb-ft)
    Caliper Bolts88 Nm (65 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reinstall wheel and lower vehicle
Install the wheel onto the hub and hand-tighten all lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle until the tire just contacts the ground. Torque the lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Fully lower the vehicle and remove jack stands.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal
  2. Start the vehicle and verify no ABS warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
  3. Perform a system scan with a diagnostic tool to verify ABS communication and clear any stored codes
  4. Test drive the vehicle in a safe area at low speed to verify ABS sensor operation
  5. Check for any unusual noises or vibrations from the wheel hub area

Verification

  • Use a scan tool to verify the ABS wheel speed sensor is reading correctly and matches the other wheel speeds
  • Verify no ABS or traction control warning lights are illuminated
  • Perform a low-speed brake test to confirm ABS modulation is functioning properly
  • Visually inspect the tone ring for proper alignment and clearance to the sensor
  • Check wheel hub for any play or abnormal noise during rotation
