This procedure covers the replacement of both headlight bulbs on the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, involving access through the engine compartment without headlight assembly removal.

Warnings

Always handle LED bulbs by the base only. Never touch the LED module or heat sink with bare hands as oils can reduce lifespan.
Ensure headlights have been off for at least 10 minutes before starting to allow LED heat sinks to cool.
ℹ️The Bolt EUV uses LED headlight assemblies. Ensure replacement bulbs are exact OEM or approved equivalents as incompatible bulbs may cause warning messages.

Tools required

Work gloves (clean, lint-free)Essential
Flathead screwdriver
10mm socket wrench
Flashlight or work lightEssential

Parts

  • Low beam LED headlight bulb × 2 — Use OEM specification GM part 84977902 or equivalent
  • High beam LED headlight bulb × 2 — Use OEM specification GM part 84977903 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off all electrical systems
  2. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  3. Allow headlight assemblies to cool for at least 10 minutes if recently used
  4. Identify which bulbs need replacement: low beam (outer position) or high beam (inner position)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access driver side headlight assembly
Locate the dust cover on the rear of the driver side headlight assembly. You may need to move aside wiring harnesses or the windshield washer fluid reservoir neck for better access. The low beam bulb is positioned on the outer side, high beam on the inner side of the assembly.
  2. 2
    Remove bulb dust cover
Rotate the dust cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight back to remove. Set aside in a clean area to prevent contamination of the seal.
  3. 3
    Disconnect bulb electrical connector
Press the release tab on the electrical connector and pull straight back to disconnect from the bulb. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself.
  4. 4
    Remove old bulb
Rotate the bulb holder counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull straight out from the headlight assembly. Note the orientation of the bulb and any alignment tabs for reinstallation.
  5. 5
    Install new bulb
Wearing clean gloves, remove the new bulb from its packaging by the base only. Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight assembly and insert straight in. Rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place with a positive click.
  6. 6
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector straight onto the bulb base until the release tab clicks into locked position. Gently tug to verify secure connection.
  7. 7
    Reinstall dust cover
Align the dust cover with the headlight assembly opening and push it into place. Rotate clockwise 1/4 turn to lock. Ensure the seal is properly seated all around.
  8. 8
    Repeat for passenger side
Access the passenger side headlight assembly from the right side of the engine compartment. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for the passenger side bulb replacement. The passenger side typically has more clearance and easier access.
  9. 9
    Test headlight operation
Turn the ignition to ON position (or start the vehicle). Test both low beam and high beam functions on both sides. Verify no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster indicating bulb failure.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all dust covers are properly sealed to prevent moisture intrusion
  2. Route all wiring harnesses back to original positions and secure any clips
  3. Close hood and verify headlight alignment appears normal

Verification

  • With headlights on, walk around vehicle to confirm both sides illuminate properly for low and high beams
  • Check instrument cluster for any bulb-out warning messages
  • Verify headlight beam pattern appears symmetrical and properly aimed (no significant change from before replacement)
  • Confirm dust covers are secure with no gaps
