Replace a faulty seat heater element in the front driver or passenger seat by removing the seat from the vehicle, disassembling the seat cover and foam, and installing a new heating element.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before beginning work to prevent accidental airbag deployment from seat-mounted side airbags.
⚠Seat heater elements are fragile. Do not bend, fold, or crease the heating pad as this will damage the internal heating wires.
⚠Take photos during disassembly to ensure correct routing of heater wires and proper seat cover alignment during reassembly.
ℹ️This procedure applies to front seats only. The 2023 Bolt EUV does not have rear seat heaters as standard equipment.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Move seat to full forward position to access rear mounting bolts, then move to full rear position to access front bolts
- Disconnect seat heater connector and any other electrical connectors under the seat before removal
Procedure
- 1Disconnect seat electrical connectionsSlide the seat fully rearward. Locate all electrical connectors underneath the seat, including the seat heater connector, seat position sensor, and if equipped, side airbag connector. Press the release tabs and disconnect all connectors. Label or photograph connector positions for reassembly.
- 2Remove seat mounting boltsLocate the four seat track mounting bolts (two at front, two at rear). Using a 13mm socket, remove all four mounting bolts. Support the seat while removing the final bolts to prevent it from shifting. Carefully lift the seat out of the vehicle and place on a clean work surface with the seat bottom facing up.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 3Test heater element for continuityBefore disassembly, use a multimeter to verify the heater element is faulty. Set multimeter to resistance (ohms) mode. The heater element should read 2-5 ohms between the two wire terminals. An open circuit (infinite resistance) or short circuit (zero resistance) confirms element failure. Document readings.
- 4Remove seat back (if applicable)If replacing cushion heater element, the seat back may be removed for easier access. Locate the hinge bolts or release mechanism connecting seat back to seat bottom. Remove bolts or release mechanism and separate seat back from seat cushion. Set seat back aside in a safe location.
- 5Remove seat cover hog ringsTurn seat cushion upside down. Using hog ring pliers, carefully remove all hog rings securing the seat cover to the seat frame. Work methodically around the perimeter, keeping track of hog ring locations. Store removed hog rings for reuse if not damaged. Note the routing of the heater element wiring harness through the foam.
- 6Separate seat cover from foamCarefully peel back the seat cover from the foam cushion, taking care not to damage the fabric or foam. The heater element is typically attached to the underside of the seat cover or embedded between layers. Work slowly and photograph the exact position and routing of the existing heater element wiring.
- 7Disconnect and remove old heater elementLocate where the heater element wiring connects to the main harness. Disconnect the connector or cut wires if necessary (leaving enough length to splice new element). Carefully peel or cut away any adhesive securing the heater pad to the seat cover or foam. Remove the old heater element completely. Clean any adhesive residue from the mounting surface.
- 8Position new heater elementPlace the new heater element in the exact position as the original, using your reference photos. Ensure the element is flat with no wrinkles, folds, or creases. The heating wires must not be kinked or bent sharply. Verify the element is centered and properly oriented before securing. The connector end should route toward the seat bottom front or side as originally positioned.
- 9Secure heater elementIf the new element has adhesive backing, remove the protective liner and carefully press the element into place, working from center outward to eliminate air bubbles. If not self-adhesive, use heat-resistant spray adhesive or the original attachment method to secure the element. Ensure the element is completely flat and will not shift when the seat cover is reinstalled.
- 10Connect heater element wiringRoute the heater element wiring through the foam and frame as originally configured. Connect the heater element wiring to the main seat harness connector. If wires were cut, use weather-resistant crimp connectors and ensure connections are secure and insulated. Verify no wires are pinched or under tension.
- 11Reinstall seat coverCarefully stretch the seat cover back over the foam cushion, ensuring proper alignment with all seams and contours. Verify the heater element remains flat and properly positioned. Begin installing hog rings at the front center, then rear center, then work outward to the sides. Use hog ring pliers to secure all attachment points. Ensure the cover is taut but not overstretched.
- 12Reattach seat back (if removed)If the seat back was removed, align it with the seat cushion and reinstall the hinge bolts or reconnect the attachment mechanism. Ensure the seat back operates smoothly through its full range of adjustment.
- 13Reinstall seat in vehicleCarefully lift the seat and position it over the four mounting holes in the vehicle floor. Align all four seat track mounting points. Start all four mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench and 13mm socket, tighten all four mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect electrical connectionsReconnect all electrical connectors under the seat in their original positions, including the seat heater connector, seat position sensor, and side airbag connector (if equipped). Ensure all connectors click securely into place and locking tabs are fully engaged.
- 15Reconnect battery and test systemReconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and tighten to specification. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start). Activate the seat heater using the seat control switch and verify the indicator light illuminates. Allow the heater to run for 5-10 minutes and verify the seat surface warms evenly with no cold spots or overheating areas.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all hog rings are properly seated and the seat cover is evenly tensioned with no wrinkles or bunching
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully engaged and secured with locking tabs
- Test seat adjustment mechanisms to ensure full range of motion is not obstructed
- Check that seat-mounted airbag warning light does not remain illuminated after reconnecting battery
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON and activate seat heater - indicator light should illuminate immediately
- Allow seat heater to operate for 10 minutes on high setting - seat surface should warm evenly to approximately 100-110°F
- Check for cold spots by moving hand across entire seat surface - uniform heat indicates proper installation
- Verify no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster related to airbag or seat systems
- Test seat adjustment functions in all directions to ensure no interference from wiring or components
- Use multimeter to verify heater element resistance is within 2-5 ohm range when measured at connector
