Replace the tail light bulb(s) on a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV by accessing the light assembly from inside the cargo area.

Warnings

ℹ️The 2023 Bolt EUV uses LED tail light modules rather than traditional incandescent bulbs in most positions. Verify which specific light has failed before ordering parts.
Allow bulbs to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated to avoid burns.

Parts

  • Tail light bulb (verify specific socket type) × 1 — Check owner's manual for bulb type - typically LED modules on this vehicle

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off all lights
  2. Open the liftgate for access to the cargo area trim panels
  3. Identify which specific tail light function has failed (brake, turn signal, reverse, etc.)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the tail light assembly
From inside the cargo area, locate the interior trim panel on the side of the failed tail light. Gently pull back or remove the cargo area side trim panel to expose the back of the tail light assembly. Some panels may have push pins or fasteners that need to be carefully released.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the back of the tail light assembly. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the socket. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
  3. 3
    Remove the bulb socket
Identify the specific bulb socket for the failed light. Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight out from the tail light assembly housing. Note the orientation for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Remove the failed bulb
For traditional bulbs: pull the bulb straight out from the socket. For bayonet-style bulbs: press in gently and rotate counterclockwise before removing. Avoid touching the glass envelope of the new bulb with bare fingers to prevent oil contamination.
  5. 5
    Install the new bulb
Insert the new bulb into the socket using the reverse method of removal. Ensure the bulb is fully seated in the socket. For bayonet bulbs, press in and rotate clockwise until it locks in place.
  6. 6
    Reinstall the bulb socket
Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light assembly, aligning the tabs with the slots. Rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks securely in place.
  7. 7
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly back onto the tail light assembly until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.
  8. 8
    Test the repair
Before reinstalling trim panels, turn on the vehicle ignition and test all tail light functions (running lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights) to confirm the new bulb is working properly.
  9. 9
    Reinstall interior trim
Carefully reposition the cargo area side trim panel, ensuring all clips and fasteners are properly aligned and seated. Press firmly around the perimeter to secure the panel in place.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim panels are fully secured and properly aligned
  2. Close the liftgate and verify exterior appearance is correct

Verification

  • Test all tail light functions with an assistant or by backing up to a reflective surface
  • Verify brake lights illuminate when pedal is pressed
  • Check turn signals flash at correct rate (no hyper-flashing)
  • Confirm no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster
