Parts
- Tail light bulb (verify specific socket type) × 1 — Check owner's manual for bulb type - typically LED modules on this vehicle
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off all lights
- Open the liftgate for access to the cargo area trim panels
- Identify which specific tail light function has failed (brake, turn signal, reverse, etc.)
Procedure
- 1Access the tail light assemblyFrom inside the cargo area, locate the interior trim panel on the side of the failed tail light. Gently pull back or remove the cargo area side trim panel to expose the back of the tail light assembly. Some panels may have push pins or fasteners that need to be carefully released.
- 2Disconnect the electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the back of the tail light assembly. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the socket. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
- 3Remove the bulb socketIdentify the specific bulb socket for the failed light. Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight out from the tail light assembly housing. Note the orientation for reinstallation.
- 4Remove the failed bulbFor traditional bulbs: pull the bulb straight out from the socket. For bayonet-style bulbs: press in gently and rotate counterclockwise before removing. Avoid touching the glass envelope of the new bulb with bare fingers to prevent oil contamination.
- 5Install the new bulbInsert the new bulb into the socket using the reverse method of removal. Ensure the bulb is fully seated in the socket. For bayonet bulbs, press in and rotate clockwise until it locks in place.
- 6Reinstall the bulb socketInsert the bulb socket back into the tail light assembly, aligning the tabs with the slots. Rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks securely in place.
- 7Reconnect the electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly back onto the tail light assembly until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.
- 8Test the repairBefore reinstalling trim panels, turn on the vehicle ignition and test all tail light functions (running lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights) to confirm the new bulb is working properly.
- 9Reinstall interior trimCarefully reposition the cargo area side trim panel, ensuring all clips and fasteners are properly aligned and seated. Press firmly around the perimeter to secure the panel in place.
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are fully secured and properly aligned
- Close the liftgate and verify exterior appearance is correct
Verification
- Test all tail light functions with an assistant or by backing up to a reflective surface
- Verify brake lights illuminate when pedal is pressed
- Check turn signals flash at correct rate (no hyper-flashing)
- Confirm no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster
