Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key fob from vehicle
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and secure away from battery post
- Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Move wiper arms to mid-position on windshield for easier access
- Ensure windshield washer reservoir is not overfilled to prevent spillage during cowl removal
Procedure
- 1Remove wiper armsLift the wiper arm away from the windshield. Remove the protective cap at the base of each wiper arm. Use a 13mm socket to loosen and remove the wiper arm retaining nuts. Mark the position of the wiper arms on the windshield with tape for proper reinstallation alignment. Carefully pull the wiper arms straight off the wiper posts using a rocking motion.
- 2Remove cowl cover panelsOpen the hood fully. Locate and remove the plastic cowl cover screws along the rear edge of the hood opening (typically 6-8 screws). Gently release the retaining clips along the cowl panel using trim removal tools. Carefully lift the cowl cover panels away, starting from one side and working across. Disconnect any washer hoses connected to the cowl panel if equipped.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect washer hosesLocate the windshield washer hoses connected to the washer nozzles at the base of the windshield. Squeeze the retaining clips and pull the hoses straight off the nozzle fittings. Position hoses away from work area to prevent contamination or damage.
- 4Disconnect wiper motor electrical connectorLocate the wiper motor electrical connector on the motor housing. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight out to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If connector is difficult to access, note routing for reassembly.⚠Ensure 12V battery remains disconnected before handling electrical connectors to prevent accidental motor activation.
- 5Remove wiper linkage access coverIf equipped, remove any protective covers or shields over the wiper linkage assembly using appropriate socket. This may be a plastic or metal cover secured with screws or clips. Set aside for reinstallation.
- 6Disconnect wiper linkage from motorLocate the wiper linkage arm connection to the motor output shaft. Use a pick tool or small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the retaining clip securing the linkage ball socket to the motor crank arm. Pull the linkage arm away from the motor crank arm. Support the linkage to prevent it from falling.
- 7Remove wiper motor mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the wiper motor mounting bolts (typically 3-4 bolts). Support the motor assembly as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Note the position of any ground straps or brackets attached to the mounting bolts.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)Ground Strap Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 8Remove wiper motor assemblyCarefully maneuver the wiper motor assembly out of the cowl area. The motor may need to be rotated or tilted to clear surrounding components. Inspect the motor mounting area for debris, corrosion, or damage. Clean the mounting surface with shop towels if necessary.
- 9Install new wiper motorPosition the new wiper motor assembly into the mounting location, ensuring proper alignment with mounting holes. If a new mounting seal or gasket is included, install it per manufacturer instructions. Insert mounting bolts loosely to hold motor in position. Ensure any ground straps are positioned correctly under bolt heads with clean metal-to-metal contact.ℹ️Clean ground strap contact surfaces on both motor and vehicle body to ensure proper electrical grounding.
- 10Torque wiper motor mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench, tighten the wiper motor mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating. Pay special attention to any bolts securing ground straps, ensuring proper torque is applied.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)Ground Strap Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect wiper linkagePosition the wiper linkage ball socket over the motor crank arm ball stud. Press firmly until the socket seats completely onto the ball. Install the retaining clip, ensuring it fully engages and locks the connection. Verify the linkage moves freely without binding.
- 12Reconnect electrical connectorRoute the wiper motor electrical connector along the original path. Align the connector and press firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 13Reinstall cowl cover and componentsReconnect windshield washer hoses to nozzle fittings, ensuring they click into place. Position the cowl cover panels, aligning all mounting holes and clips. Press down firmly to engage retaining clips. Install and torque cowl cover screws to specification.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 14Reinstall wiper armsPosition wiper arms onto wiper posts, aligning with the tape marks made during removal. The driver side arm should be approximately 1 inch from the lower windshield trim, passenger side approximately 2 inches. Install wiper arm retaining nuts and tighten with 13mm socket. Install protective caps over nuts. Verify arms move freely and do not contact hood or cowl.
- 15Reconnect battery and testReconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and torque to specification. Turn ignition to ON position without starting (pressing start button without brake pedal). Test wiper operation in all speeds (low, high, intermittent) and verify washer function. Check for proper park position, unusual noise, or binding. Verify wiper blades contact windshield evenly across full sweep.⚠Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts as this may damage the terminal or battery post.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify wiper linkage connection is secure with retaining clip properly installed
- Check that all cowl cover clips are engaged and screws are torqued to specification
- Confirm wiper arms are positioned correctly before tightening retaining nuts
Verification
- Test all wiper speeds (intermittent, low, high) and verify smooth operation without binding or unusual noise
- Verify wipers return to proper park position when turned off
- Test windshield washer function to confirm hoses are properly connected
- Check that wiper blades make full contact with windshield across entire sweep pattern
- Visually inspect for any fluid leaks around washer hose connections
- Confirm no interference between wiper arms and hood or cowl panel during operation
