Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 5 minutes to allow capacitors to discharge
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
- Remove passenger side wheel well splash shield for improved access if needed
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
Procedure
- 1Access AC compressorLocate the AC compressor on the passenger side lower front of the engine block. Working from underneath the vehicle, identify the clutch coil assembly at the front of the compressor pulley. Remove any belly pans or shields blocking access to the compressor front face.
- 2Disconnect clutch coil electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the clutch coil. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector from the coil terminals. Move the wiring harness aside to prevent damage during removal.
- 3Remove clutch coil retaining snap ringUsing snap ring pliers, carefully compress and remove the snap ring that secures the clutch coil to the compressor housing. The snap ring is located in a groove on the compressor nose. Work carefully to avoid snapping the ring off with excessive force. Retain the snap ring if it is in good condition and not deformed.⚠Wear safety glasses during snap ring removal as the ring can spring free unexpectedly.
- 4Remove clutch coil assemblyWith the snap ring removed, carefully pull the clutch coil straight off the compressor nose. The coil may be tight fitting. If resistance is encountered, gently work it side to side while pulling outward. Do not pry against the pulley or clutch plate. Note the orientation of any shims or spacers behind the coil for reassembly.
- 5Inspect compressor nose and pulleyWith the coil removed, inspect the compressor shaft nose for damage, scoring, or rust. Clean the shaft surface with a wire brush if corrosion is present. Verify the clutch pulley bearing spins freely without grinding or binding. Check the clutch plate on the front of the compressor shaft for wear or cracks.
- 6Prepare new clutch coilRemove the new clutch coil from packaging and verify it matches the original part. Check that any included shims or hardware are present. If the original coil had shims installed behind it, transfer them to the new coil in the same arrangement.
- 7Install new clutch coilAlign the new clutch coil with the compressor nose, ensuring the electrical terminals are positioned for connector access. Slide the coil onto the compressor nose fully, pressing it firmly into position until it seats against the compressor housing. Verify the coil is seated completely and evenly around the circumference.
- 8Install snap ringUsing snap ring pliers, install the retaining snap ring into the groove on the compressor nose. Ensure the snap ring is fully seated in the groove around its entire circumference. Verify the coil cannot pull forward off the compressor nose.
- 9Verify clutch air gapUsing a feeler gauge, measure the air gap between the clutch plate and the pulley face at three points around the circumference. The gap should be 0.014 to 0.026 inches (0.35 to 0.66 mm). If the gap is incorrect, remove the coil and add or remove shims as needed.
