Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow transmission to cool completely if vehicle was recently driven

    The overdrive solenoid is part of the solenoid body pack visible inside the transmission valve body. On the 6R80, the solenoid pack is secured to the valve body with multiple bolts. Identify the solenoid body connector and carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector by releasing the locking tab and pulling straight down.

    Using a 10mm socket, remove all solenoid body mounting bolts. There are typically 8-10 bolts securing the solenoid pack. Keep bolts organized and note their positions as some may be different lengths. Support the solenoid body with one hand while removing the final bolts.
    Additional fluid will drain when solenoid body is removed. Keep drain pan positioned underneath.

    Check fluid level and cycle transmission
    Start engine and allow to idle. With parking brake applied and foot on brake pedal, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D and back to P), pausing 2-3 seconds in each position. With engine at idle and transmission in Park, check fluid level on dipstick. Fluid should be in the crosshatch area when warm. Add fluid in small increments if needed.
