Sunroof Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof switch assembly on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150, typically mounted in the overhead console.

• Overhead console trim clips (if damaged) × 4 — Ford W710759-S300

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and ensure sunroof is fully closed
2. Turn ignition off and remove key
3. Allow at least 2 minutes after ignition off for airbag system capacitor discharge
4. Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical short circuits
5. Ensure adequate overhead lighting to see into console cavity

Procedure

   Disconnect battery negative terminal
   Using a 10mm socket or battery terminal wrench, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection during the repair.

   Remove overhead console lens cover
   Starting at the rear edge of the overhead console lens (near the rear of the vehicle), carefully insert a plastic trim removal tool between the lens and the headliner. Gently pry downward to release the retaining clips. Work your way forward, releasing each clip until the lens cover can be lowered. On models with integrated reading lights, the lens may hinge forward from the front edge.

   Disconnect overhead console wiring
   With the lens cover lowered, locate the electrical connectors for the reading lights, HomeLink module (if equipped), and sunroof switch. Press the locking tabs on each connector and carefully pull to disconnect. Note the routing and orientation of each connector for reassembly.

   Remove overhead console assembly
   Locate the two Phillips head screws or T20 Torx screws at the front corners of the overhead console base (near the windshield). Remove these screws completely. Gently pull the entire console assembly downward and away from the headliner, watching for any remaining wire harness connections. Set the console aside on a clean work surface.

   Remove sunroof switch from console
   With the console removed from the vehicle, locate the sunroof switch module on the rear portion of the console assembly. The switch is typically held by two small Phillips screws or plastic retaining tabs. If screw-retained, remove the screws. If tab-retained, depress the tabs on each side while pushing the switch out from the front of the console. Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the switch by pressing the locking tab and pulling.

   Install new sunroof switch
   Connect the electrical connector to the new sunroof switch until you hear or feel a positive click, indicating proper locking. Position the switch into the console housing, ensuring proper alignment with the mounting holes or tab slots. If screw-retained, install the retaining screws and tighten to a snug fit (do not overtighten plastic housings). If tab-retained, press firmly until tabs click into place.

   Reinstall overhead console assembly
   Route the wire harnesses back through the headliner opening, ensuring no wires are pinched or twisted. Align the console mounting holes with the threaded inserts in the headliner structure. Install the two mounting screws at the front corners and tighten securely but do not overtighten into the plastic headliner backing. Reconnect all electrical connectors for reading lights, HomeLink, and sunroof switch, ensuring each locks with an audible click.

   Reinstall console lens cover
   Align the front edge of the lens cover with the console housing. If the lens hinges from the front, insert the hinge tabs first. Press firmly around the perimeter of the lens, starting at the front and working rearward, until all retaining clips snap into place. Verify the lens sits flush with the headliner and does not rattle.

   Reconnect battery
   Clean both the battery terminal and cable end with a wire brush if any corrosion is present. Place the negative cable back onto the negative battery post and tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Ensure the connection is secure but do not overtighten, as this can damage the battery post.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim clips are properly seated and the overhead console is flush with the headliner
2. Test all overhead console functions including reading lights and HomeLink (if equipped) before testing sunroof
3. Reset power window one-touch auto function if needed: roll window fully down, then fully up and hold switch for 2 seconds

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run)
• Press the sunroof switch rearward to VENT position and verify sunroof tilts up at rear edge
• Press switch forward to CLOSE and verify sunroof returns to fully closed position
• Press and hold switch rearward to SLIDE OPEN and verify sunroof opens smoothly without binding
• Press switch forward to CLOSE and verify complete closure with no gaps
• Test the one-touch express open and close functions by briefly tapping the switch in each direction
• Verify no warning lights or messages appear on the instrument cluster related to sunroof operation
• Check that overhead console lens and all trim pieces are secure with no rattles
