Parts
- Driver airbag module assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford replacement only
- Airbag module mounting bolts (Torx) × 2 — Ford recommends replacing - included with some airbag modules
Preparation
- Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground with parking brake engaged and transmission in Park
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key/fob from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery terminal first, then positive terminal
- Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to fully discharge - do not skip this critical safety step
- Verify steering wheel is in straight-ahead position before beginning work
- Take photo of airbag connector orientation for reference during installation
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery and verify discharge timeUsing a 10mm socket, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal bolt first. Move the negative cable completely away from the battery post. Then remove the positive terminal bolt and move that cable away. Verify that 2 full minutes have elapsed since disconnection before proceeding to the next step. This waiting period is mandatory to allow the airbag system backup capacitors to fully discharge.⚠️The 2-minute wait time is not optional. Proceeding early risks accidental airbag deployment during removal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 2Access rear airbag mounting boltsFrom behind the steering wheel, locate the two access holes on the left and right sides of the steering wheel back cover. These holes provide access to the airbag module retaining bolts. You may need to turn the wheel slightly to access each hole, but ensure the wheel returns to center position before removal.
- 3Remove airbag module mounting boltsInsert a Torx T30 bit through each access hole and remove the two airbag module mounting bolts. Turn counterclockwise to remove. Keep these bolts if they are in good condition, or replace with new Ford OEM bolts if specified by the replacement airbag instructions. Support the airbag module from the front as you remove the second bolt to prevent it from falling.⚠Support the airbag module from the front side as the second bolt is removed to prevent dropping.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 4Carefully pull airbag module forwardGently pull the airbag module straight toward you away from the steering wheel. Move slowly and do not yank or twist the module, as the electrical connectors are still attached at the rear. Pull the module forward approximately 3-4 inches to access the connectors behind it.
- 5Disconnect horn and airbag connectorsLocate the horn connector (typically smaller) and airbag connector (larger with bright yellow color) on the back of the airbag module. Press the release tab on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. The airbag connector will have a yellow safety clip or locking mechanism - depress or slide this before attempting to remove the connector. Never pull on the wires themselves.⚠️Handle connectors by their bodies only, not the wiring. Damaged airbag wiring creates deployment risk.
- 6Remove old airbag module from vehicleOnce both connectors are disconnected, remove the airbag module completely from the steering wheel. Immediately place it face-up (deployment side facing the ceiling) on a clean, flat surface at least 6 feet away from the work area. Never place an airbag module face-down or in a location where it could fall or be struck.⚠️Airbag must be placed face-UP on a stable surface. If deployment occurs, the airbag needs clear upward space.
- 7Inspect steering wheel and connectorsWith the airbag removed, inspect the steering wheel mounting surface for damage or cracks. Verify the horn and airbag connectors on the vehicle side (clock spring assembly) are clean and undamaged. Check that connector pins are straight and free of corrosion. Do not spray any cleaners into the connectors. If clock spring damage is evident, it must be replaced before installing the new airbag.
- 8Prepare new airbag moduleRemove the new airbag module from its protective packaging only when ready to install. Inspect it for any shipping damage. Verify the connector types match your reference photo from preparation. Handle the new module by its edges and mounting points only, avoiding contact with the deployment surface or connector pins.
- 9Connect horn and airbag connectors to new moduleHold the new airbag module in position near the steering wheel. Connect the horn connector first, pushing firmly until you hear/feel the locking tab engage. Then connect the airbag connector (yellow), ensuring it is fully seated and the safety lock engages completely. Gently tug on each connector body to verify they are locked in place.⚠Connectors must click/lock fully into place. Partially connected airbag connectors will trigger warning lights and may prevent deployment.
- 10Position airbag module onto steering wheelCarefully guide the new airbag module straight back onto the steering wheel, routing the connector wiring neatly into the available space. Ensure no wires are pinched between the airbag module and steering wheel. Align the mounting holes on the airbag module with the threaded inserts in the steering wheel.
- 11Install and torque airbag mounting boltsInsert both Torx T30 airbag mounting bolts through the rear access holes in the steering wheel and thread them into the airbag module by hand. Tighten both bolts evenly in a cross pattern. Using a torque wrench, torque each bolt to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, as this can damage the airbag mounting points or steering wheel structure.⚠Precise torque is critical. Over-torquing can damage the airbag module; under-torquing risks the module separating during deployment.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery terminalsReconnect the positive battery terminal first, installing the terminal bolt and torquing to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft). Then reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque its bolt to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft). Ensure both connections are clean and secure.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 13Clear airbag system codes and verify operationTurn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The airbag warning light on the instrument cluster should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds, then turn off. If the light remains on or flashes, there is a fault. Connect an OBD-II scan tool and check for airbag system diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Clear any stored codes related to the airbag module replacement. If new codes are present or codes cannot be cleared, recheck all connections and torque values.⚠️Do not operate the vehicle if the airbag warning light stays illuminated. This indicates a system fault that must be diagnosed and corrected.
Reassembly
- Ensure steering wheel remains in the centered position throughout the procedure to prevent clock spring damage
- Verify all connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged before securing airbag module
- Double-check that airbag mounting bolts are torqued to specification - this is critical for proper deployment function
- After battery reconnection, allow the vehicle's systems to initialize for 1-2 minutes before checking warning lights
Verification
- Airbag warning light illuminates briefly during ignition-on self-test, then extinguishes completely
- No airbag-related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present when scanned with OBD-II tool
- Horn functions properly when pressed (verifies horn circuit connection)
- Airbag module is firmly secured to steering wheel with no movement or gaps
- Test drive vehicle and verify airbag warning light does not illuminate during operation
- Recommend professional verification scan if any warning lights persist or if uncertain about installation quality
