⚠️SAFETY CRITICAL: Airbag system contains pyrotechnic devices. Improper handling can cause deployment resulting in severe injury or death. If you are not absolutely confident in your ability to perform this repair, seek professional service.
⚠️Battery MUST be disconnected for minimum 2 minutes before any airbag work to allow capacitors to discharge. Failure to wait can result in airbag deployment.
⚠️NEVER probe airbag connectors with power connected. Always disconnect battery first.
⚠️Place removed airbag modules on a clean, flat surface with the deployment side facing UP, away from people. Never place airbag face-down.
⚠Airbag connectors contain shorting bars. Do not attempt to bypass or modify connectors. Use only OEM replacement parts.
⚠After installation, any airbag fault codes MUST be cleared and system verified with proper scan tool. A malfunction indicator means the system will not protect occupants.
⚠Wear clean gloves when handling new airbag modules to prevent contamination of deployment surfaces.

Procedure
- 1Remove seat back lower trim panelUsing trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the lower seat back trim panel starting from the bottom edge. Work around the perimeter to release all retaining clips. On F-150 seats, there are typically 6-8 clips securing the panel. Pull the panel away from the seat back frame and set aside. Inspect clips for damage and replace any broken clips.
- 2Remove seat back side bolster trimLocate the outboard side bolster trim panel where the side airbag is housed. This is typically the outboard edge of the seat back. Remove any visible screws securing the trim (usually T25 or T30 Torx screws at top and bottom). Carefully release the trim panel clips by pulling the panel away from the seat frame. The side airbag module will be visible behind this panel.
- 3Locate and document airbag connectorIdentify the side airbag electrical connector. This is a yellow connector with a locking tab, typically located at the base of the airbag module. The connector has a shorting bar that automatically shorts the circuit when disconnected. Take a clear photo of the connector orientation and wire routing for reassembly reference.⚠Verify battery has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes before proceeding. Double-check both terminals are disconnected.
- 4Disconnect side airbag electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the yellow airbag connector and carefully pull the connector halves apart. The connector should separate with moderate force. Do not pull on wires. The vehicle-side connector will automatically insert a shorting bar when separated. Route the connector away from the airbag module.⚠️Handle connector gently. Do not force or twist connector as this can damage internal shorting bar safety mechanism.
- 5Remove side airbag module mounting boltsLocate the side airbag module mounting bolts, typically two Torx bolts (T30 or T45) securing the module to the seat back frame. These bolts are usually positioned at the top and bottom of the airbag module housing. Remove both bolts completely and store in a clean container. Support the airbag module while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specSide Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 6Remove side airbag module from seatCarefully extract the side airbag module from the seat back frame. The module may have alignment tabs or clips that need to be released. Slide the module upward or outward (depending on design) while supporting it with both hands. Once free, immediately place the airbag module on a clean, flat surface with the deployment side (the side that would face the occupant) pointing UP toward the ceiling.⚠️CRITICAL: Place airbag with deployment side facing UP. Never place face-down on any surface. Keep away from heat sources and people.
- 7Inspect seat frame and mounting pointsExamine the seat back frame where the airbag was mounted. Check for any damage, cracks, or deformation. Inspect the mounting holes for stripped threads or damage. Verify the seat back frame structure is intact. Check the wire harness routing path for any chafing, cuts, or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a clean, dry cloth to remove any debris.
- 8Prepare new side airbag moduleRemove the new side airbag module from its protective packaging. Wear clean gloves to handle the module. Inspect the new module for any shipping damage. Verify the part number matches the original module and is correct for the specific seat position (driver or passenger). Check that the connector on the new module matches the vehicle harness connector type. Do not remove any protective covers or tape from deployment surfaces until module is installed.⚠Verify correct part number for seat position. Driver and passenger side airbags may have different part numbers even if they appear identical.
- 9Install new side airbag module into seat framePosition the new airbag module into the seat back frame opening, ensuring the deployment side faces outboard toward where the occupant would sit. Align the module mounting holes with the threaded inserts in the seat frame. The module should seat flush against the frame. Ensure no wires are pinched between the module and frame. Insert both mounting bolts by hand to start threads.
- 10Torque side airbag module mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench with appropriate Torx bit, torque both side airbag module mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern (if applicable) or alternating pattern. Start with the top bolt, then bottom bolt, returning to verify torque on top bolt. Ensure bolts are fully seated and torqued correctly as this is safety-critical for proper airbag deployment geometry.⚠️SAFETY CRITICAL: Proper torque is essential for correct airbag deployment. Under-torqued bolts can allow module movement; over-torqued can strip threads. Use calibrated torque wrench.Torque specSide Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect side airbag electrical connectorRoute the airbag connector along the original path as documented in photos. Align the yellow airbag connector halves carefully, ensuring correct orientation (connectors are keyed and will only fit one way). Push the connector halves together firmly until you hear and feel a distinct click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on both sides of the connector to verify it is fully locked. The shorting bar in the vehicle-side connector will automatically disengage when properly connected.⚠Ensure connector locks with audible click. Incomplete connection will cause airbag warning light and system malfunction.
- 12Reinstall seat back trim panelsReinstall the outboard side bolster trim panel over the airbag module. Ensure the trim panel does not pinch or interfere with the airbag module or wiring. The airbag deployment path must be clear and unobstructed. Align all trim clips and press firmly to seat. Install any Torx screws that were removed and tighten snugly (hand-tight plus slight additional torque, approximately 2-3 Nm if torque specification is not provided for trim screws). Reinstall the lower seat back trim panel, aligning all clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage.
- 13Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the positive battery terminal first, ensuring clean contact surfaces. Torque the positive terminal bolt to specification. Reconnect the negative battery terminal, ensuring clean contact surfaces. Torque the negative terminal bolt to specification. The vehicle may require initialization procedures after battery reconnection. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The airbag warning light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds during bulb check, then extinguish. If the light remains on or flashes, a fault exists and must be diagnosed.⚠️If airbag warning light stays illuminated or flashes after reconnection, STOP and diagnose immediately. The airbag system is not functional and will not protect occupants in a crash.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 14Scan for fault codes and clear if applicableUsing a professional-grade scan tool capable of accessing airbag/SRS system, connect to the vehicle OBD-II port. Navigate to the airbag control module and read any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If a code is present indicating previous airbag fault or deployment, clear the code only after verifying the new airbag is properly installed and all connections are secure. Perform any manufacturer-required relearn or initialization procedures. Verify no current faults exist. Confirm airbag warning light remains OFF with ignition ON and during a short test drive.⚠Some airbag systems require dealer-level scan tools for proper code clearing and module verification. Generic code readers may not access all airbag functions.
