This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the lower ball joint on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, including separation from the knuckle and proper torque specifications.
Warnings
⚠️Vehicle must be properly supported on jack stands rated for the vehicle weight. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
⚠Suspension components are under tension. Use caution when separating ball joints to avoid sudden release of stored energy.
⚠Ball joint separator tools can damage boots and seals on adjacent components. Shield surrounding parts and use controlled force.
ℹ️Control arm bolts must be torqued with vehicle weight on wheels at normal ride height. Final torque will be performed after lowering vehicle.

Parts
- Lower ball joint assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
- Cotter pin × 1 — Standard automotive cotter pin
- Pinch bolt (if applicable) × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Loosen wheel lug nuts while vehicle is still on ground (do not remove)
- Lift front of vehicle with floor jack at designated jacking point
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands placed at frame rails
- Remove wheel and tire assembly completely
Procedure
- 1Access lower ball jointInspect the lower ball joint location on the lower control arm where it connects to the steering knuckle. Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and allow to soak for several minutes. Clean any dirt or debris from the ball joint stud and nut area with a wire brush.
- 2Disconnect sway bar link if necessaryIf the sway bar link interferes with access to the ball joint, disconnect it from the lower control arm. Hold the shaft with an Allen key to prevent rotation while removing the nut. Move the link out of the work area.ℹ️Some configurations may not require sway bar link removal. Assess clearance before proceeding.Torque specSway Bar Link71 Nm (52 lb-ft)
- 3Remove ball joint cotter pin and nutStraighten and remove the cotter pin from the ball joint castle nut using a cotter pin puller. Discard the old cotter pin. Using the appropriate socket, remove the ball joint nut completely but leave it loosely threaded on the stud by a few turns to prevent sudden separation.⚠Do not fully remove the nut yet. Leave it partially threaded to control separation and prevent damage.
- 4Separate ball joint from knucklePosition the ball joint separator tool between the lower control arm and steering knuckle. Apply steady force to break the taper fit between the ball joint stud and knuckle. Once separated, remove the castle nut completely. Lower the control arm carefully to release tension and fully separate the ball joint from the knuckle.⚠Support the knuckle assembly to prevent it from falling or binding when the ball joint is separated.
- 5Remove ball joint from control armThe lower ball joint may be bolted or riveted to the control arm. If bolted, remove the mounting bolts securing the ball joint to the control arm. If riveted (original equipment), drill out the rivets carefully using the appropriate size drill bit, then remove the ball joint. Clean the mounting surface on the control arm thoroughly.ℹ️Replacement ball joints typically use bolts instead of rivets. OEM rivets are one-time use only.
- 6Install new ball joint to control armPosition the new ball joint on the lower control arm, aligning the mounting holes. Install the new mounting bolts (supplied with replacement ball joint) and tighten to manufacturer specifications. If no specific torque is provided with the aftermarket ball joint, tighten bolts firmly and evenly in a cross pattern.ℹ️Follow the ball joint manufacturer's torque specifications for mounting bolts if different from OEM values.
- 7Connect ball joint to knuckleRaise the lower control arm using a floor jack to align the ball joint stud with the hole in the steering knuckle. Insert the ball joint stud into the knuckle taper. Install the castle nut and tighten to the specified torque value. Align the castle nut slots with the stud hole and install a new cotter pin. Bend the cotter pin ends to secure.ℹ️If castle nut slots do not align with cotter pin hole at specified torque, tighten further up to next alignment point. Never loosen to align.Torque specBall Joint Nut101 Nm (75 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect sway bar linkIf the sway bar link was disconnected, reconnect it to the lower control arm. Hold the shaft with an Allen key and tighten the nut to specification.Torque specSway Bar Link71 Nm (52 lb-ft)
- 9Install wheel and tireClean the wheel hub mounting surface and wheel mounting surface. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Install all lug nuts and snug them in a star pattern by hand. Do not fully torque at this time.
- 10Lower vehicle and perform final torqueCarefully lower the vehicle until the suspension is at normal ride height with weight on the wheels, but keep the jack slightly supporting the vehicle. If control arm bolts were disturbed, torque them now with vehicle weight on suspension. Remove jack stands and lower vehicle completely. Torque wheel lug nuts to specification in a star pattern.ℹ️Control arm fasteners must be torqued at normal ride height to prevent premature bushing failure.Torque specControl Arm Bolts165 Nm (122 lb-ft)Wheel Lug Nuts156 Nm (115 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all fasteners are torqued to specification at proper ride height
- Verify cotter pin is properly installed and bent to prevent loosening
- Check that no tools or parts were left in the wheel well area
Verification
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and verify no unusual noises or vibrations from front suspension
- Perform visual inspection of ball joint area for proper seating and secure fasteners
- Schedule a professional front-end alignment as suspension geometry has been altered
- After 50-100 miles, re-check wheel lug nut torque and all ball joint fasteners
