This procedure covers removal and installation of the negative battery cable on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, including proper disconnection sequence and torque specifications.

Warnings

Always disconnect the negative battery cable before the positive to prevent short circuits
This vehicle has multiple control modules that may require relearning after battery disconnection; radio presets and clock will be lost
ℹ️Have radio security code available if equipped before disconnecting battery

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
13mm socket and ratchetEssential
Torque wrench (5-20 Nm range)Essential
Wire brush or battery terminal cleaner
Baking soda and water solution
Terminal protection spray

Parts

  • Negative battery cable × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and ensure ignition is off with key removed
  2. Close all doors, windows, and turn off all electrical accessories
  3. Allow engine to cool if recently driven
  4. Locate battery in engine compartment on passenger side
  5. Take note of any aftermarket electrical connections on negative cable

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove battery cover
Remove the plastic battery cover by lifting upward from the rear edge. The cover is held by clips and does not require tools for removal. Set aside in a clean location.
  2. 2
    Loosen negative terminal connection
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt (marked with minus symbol or 'NEG'). Do not remove the bolt completely at this stage, just loosen it enough to allow terminal removal.
Do not allow tools to contact both battery terminals simultaneously
  3. 3
    Disconnect negative terminal
Remove the negative terminal clamp from the battery post. Twist slightly while pulling upward if tight. Position the cable away from the battery post to prevent accidental contact. Secure cable so it cannot swing back into contact with terminal.
  4. 4
    Remove ground strap connections
Locate all ground strap connections on the negative cable. Typically one connects to the engine block and one to the chassis near the battery tray. Using a 13mm socket, remove the ground strap bolts. Note the exact location and orientation of each connection point for reinstallation.
ℹ️Take photos of ground locations before removal for reference during reinstallation

    Ground Strap Bolt16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove cable routing clips
Trace the negative cable path and release any routing clips or cable ties securing the cable to the body or other components. The cable may be routed along the inner fender or frame rail. Note routing path for proper reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Remove negative battery cable
With all connections and clips released, remove the negative battery cable assembly from the vehicle. Inspect the cable for damage, corrosion, or fraying at terminal ends and along its length.
  7. 7
Clean battery terminal and ground points
Use a wire brush or battery terminal cleaner to clean the negative battery post and the inside of the terminal clamp on the new or existing cable. Clean all ground contact surfaces on the engine block and chassis with a wire brush to bare metal. Remove any corrosion, paint, or oxidation. If corrosion is present on battery, neutralize with baking soda and water solution, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
ℹ️Clean metal-to-metal contact is critical for proper electrical grounding
  8. 8
    Install new negative cable
Route the new negative battery cable following the same path as the original. Ensure cable is not kinked, pinched, or routed near sharp edges or heat sources. Do not connect to battery terminal yet.
  9. 9
    Install ground strap connections
Connect ground straps to their respective mounting points on the engine block and chassis. Ensure clean metal-to-metal contact at each connection point. Install ground strap bolts and tighten to specification using torque wrench.
    Torque spec
    Ground Strap Bolt16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Secure cable routing
Install all cable routing clips and ensure cable is properly secured along its entire length. Cable should not contact moving parts, sharp edges, or hot surfaces. Verify adequate clearance from exhaust components and drive belts.
  11. 11
    Connect negative terminal to battery
Place the negative terminal clamp onto the battery post. Ensure clamp is fully seated and properly oriented. Install terminal bolt and tighten to specification using torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post or terminal.
Overtightening battery terminals can crack the battery case or damage the terminal
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  12. 12
Apply terminal protection and reinstall cover
Apply battery terminal protection spray if desired to prevent future corrosion. Reinstall the battery cover by aligning clips and pressing firmly until seated. Ensure cover is secure and properly positioned.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all ground connections are tight and making good contact
  2. Ensure cable routing does not interfere with any moving components
  3. Check that battery cover is properly installed and secure

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify instrument panel illuminates normally
  • Start engine and verify all systems operate correctly
  • Check for any warning lights or messages on instrument cluster
  • Verify battery charging system is functioning (voltage should be 13.5-14.5V with engine running)
  • Reset clock and radio presets as needed
  • Test power windows, locks, and other electrical accessories for proper operation
  • Perform any required module relearns per Ford service procedures if warning lights persist
