This procedure covers the inspection, cleaning, and replacement of battery terminals on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent short circuits and potential electrical system damage.
⚠Battery acid is corrosive. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Neutralize any spills with baking soda solution.
⚠Do not overtighten terminal bolts as this can crack the battery posts or damage the terminals.
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require relearning of idle and transmission adaptive values after reconnection.

Parts
- Battery terminal (positive or negative as needed) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Anti-corrosion terminal protector spray × 1 — Generic
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn off all electrical accessories and remove key from ignition
- Allow engine to cool if recently driven
- Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment on passenger side
- Inspect battery terminals for excessive corrosion, cracks, or damage to determine if replacement is needed
Procedure
- 1Disconnect negative battery terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (black) battery terminal bolt. Do not remove the bolt completely. Use a battery terminal puller if the terminal is stuck on the post. Carefully lift the terminal off the battery post and position it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect positive battery terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the positive (red) battery terminal bolt. Remove or loosen the red plastic cover if present. Carefully lift the terminal off the battery post and position it away from the battery and any metal surfaces.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 3Inspect battery posts and terminalsExamine battery posts for cracks, deformation, or excessive corrosion. Check cable terminals for cracks, broken clamps, or corroded wire connections. If terminals show cracks or the cable connection is compromised, replacement is required.
- 4Clean battery postsUsing a wire brush or battery post cleaning tool, thoroughly clean both battery posts until bare metal is visible. Remove all corrosion and oxidation. If heavy corrosion is present, apply baking soda solution to neutralize acid before brushing. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry completely.
- 5Clean or replace battery terminalsIf reusing terminals, clean the inside clamp surfaces with a terminal cleaning brush until bright metal is visible. Ensure the bolt threads are clean and undamaged. If replacing terminals, cut the old terminal off the cable leaving sufficient cable length. Strip cable insulation back approximately 1/2 inch and crimp or solder the new terminal securely to the cable.
- 6Reconnect positive battery terminalPlace the positive (red) terminal squarely onto the positive battery post. Ensure the terminal is fully seated and making complete contact. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post. Replace the red protective cover if equipped.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect negative battery terminalPlace the negative (black) terminal squarely onto the negative battery post. Ensure the terminal is fully seated and making complete contact. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench at 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft).Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 8Apply corrosion protectionApply a light coat of dielectric grease or anti-corrosion spray to the battery terminals and exposed post areas to prevent future corrosion. Do not apply between the post and terminal contact surfaces.
Reassembly
- Ensure both terminals are tight and cannot be twisted by hand
- Verify red protective cover is reinstalled on positive terminal if equipped
- Check that no tools or materials are left in engine compartment
Verification
- Start the engine to verify electrical system operation
- Check that all dashboard warning lights illuminate during key-on and extinguish after starting
- Test operation of accessories (headlights, radio, power windows)
- Reset clock and radio presets as needed
- Verify no corrosion or acid residue remains on battery or terminals
- Confirm terminals are secure and show no movement when wiggled by hand
