Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake firmly

Procedure
- 1Locate the brake booster check valveThe check valve is located in the vacuum hose between the intake manifold and the brake booster, typically closer to the brake booster end. On 3.5L EcoBoost engines, follow the vacuum hose from the brake booster toward the intake manifold. The check valve is a plastic one-way valve inline with the hose, usually within 6-12 inches of the booster connection.
- 2Release hose clamp at booster endUsing pliers or hose clamp tool, compress or slide the hose clamp securing the vacuum hose to the brake booster nipple. Move the clamp away from the connection point. If clamp is corroded or damaged, plan to replace it during reassembly.
- 3Remove check valve from brake boosterGently twist and pull the check valve assembly from the brake booster nipple. The valve may be tight due to the rubber grommet seal. Use a slight twisting motion while pulling straight outward. Do not use excessive force that could damage the booster nipple. Apply light pressure and insert the check valve into the brake booster nipple with a slight twisting motion until it seats fully. The rubber grommet should seal completely against the booster housing. Tug gently to confirm secure attachment.⚠️CRITICAL: Verify directional arrow points TOWARD brake booster. Reverse installation causes immediate brake assist failure.
- 7Connect vacuum hose to check valvePush the vacuum hose firmly onto the intake manifold side of the check valve until it bottoms out. Ensure the hose is fully seated on the valve barb. Reposition the hose clamp over the connection point and secure it tightly. The hose should not be able to pull off with hand pressure.

Reassembly

Verification
- Start engine and listen for hissing sounds near brake booster - none should be present
- With engine running, press brake pedal firmly - pedal should feel normal with power assist (relatively easy to press)
- Turn engine off and wait 10 seconds, then press brake pedal - first application should have assist, second application should be harder (confirms check valve holding vacuum)
- Restart engine and verify brake pedal returns to normal assisted feel
- Perform test drive in safe area and verify normal brake operation with full power assist at various speeds
