Complete replacement of all brake lines from master cylinder to all four wheels, including hard lines and flexible hoses. This safety-critical procedure requires methodical work and complete brake system bleeding.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY CRITICAL: Brake system failure can result in death or serious injury. If you are uncertain about any step, have a professional mechanic perform this work. Test brakes thoroughly in a safe area before normal driving.
⚠️Brake fluid is toxic and extremely corrosive to paint. Immediately flush any spills with water. Do not allow contact with skin or eyes. Dispose of used fluid according to local regulations.
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight on solid, level ground.
⚠Do not reuse old brake fluid. Always use fresh DOT 4 LV brake fluid from a sealed container. Brake fluid absorbs moisture and degrades over time.
⚠Brake lines corroded to frame brackets may break during removal. Have replacement hardware available. Apply penetrating oil 24 hours before starting if possible.
ℹ️This procedure assumes installation of a pre-bent brake line kit. Custom fabrication requires additional skills and tools not covered here.
ℹ️Take photos of brake line routing before removal. Proper routing prevents contact with hot exhaust, suspension components, and prevents kinking.

Procedure
- 1Disconnect lines at master cylinderWorking at the master cylinder under the hood, use a line wrench to carefully loosen the brake line fittings at the master cylinder outlet ports. The 2021-2024 F-150 typically has two outlet ports. Allow fluid to drain into catch pan. Cap or plug master cylinder ports immediately to prevent further fluid loss and contamination. Do not allow reservoir to fully drain to prevent air entering ABS hydraulic control unit.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 2Remove front brake flexible hosesAt each front wheel, locate where the flexible brake hose connects to the hard line at the frame bracket. Use a line wrench on the hard line side and a flare nut wrench on the hose side. Disconnect the hose from the hard line first, then remove the retaining clip or bolt securing the hose to the bracket. Finally, disconnect the hose from the caliper using a line wrench while holding the caliper fitting stationary with another wrench. Cap all open fittings.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 3Remove rear brake flexible hosesFollow the same procedure for rear flexible hoses. On RWD F-150, rear hoses connect to hard lines near the rear axle housing. Disconnect from hard line at frame or axle bracket, remove any retaining hardware, then disconnect from caliper or wheel cylinder. The rear hoses may have different routing through axle brackets - note exact positioning for reinstallation.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 4Remove hard brake lines from frameStarting from the master cylinder end, systematically remove all hard brake lines. Remove mounting clips and brackets securing lines to the frame - note that some clips are spring-type and others use bolts. Trace each line to its termination point. The F-150 has lines running along both frame rails. Use line wrenches at all junction points and carefully support lines as you disconnect them. If lines are severely corroded to brackets, cutting may be necessary - use a tube cutter to avoid damaging mounting points.Torque specMounting Bolts31 Nm (23 lb-ft)
- 5Disconnect lines at ABS module and proportioning valveIf your brake line kit includes lines to/from the ABS hydraulic control unit (typically mounted near master cylinder or under vehicle), carefully disconnect these using line wrenches. The F-150 ABS module has multiple ports - photograph connections before removal. Also disconnect any lines at the brake proportioning or distribution block if equipped. Cap all ports immediately.⚠ABS module ports are precision machined. Use only proper line wrenches to avoid rounding fittings. Stripped fittings may require expensive ABS module replacement.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 6Clean all mounting points and bracketsWith all old lines removed, use a wire brush to clean all frame-mounted brackets, clips, and mounting points. Remove any rust, old rubber isolators, or debris. Inspect all mounting hardware for damage or excessive corrosion. Replace any damaged brackets or clips. Apply a light coat of rust preventative to bare metal on frame where lines will mount.
- 7Install new hard lines to master cylinder and ABS moduleBegin installation at the master cylinder. Route new hard lines following your photos and the old line routing. Install lines to master cylinder outlet ports, threading fittings by hand first to ensure proper engagement. Connect lines to ABS module if applicable. Do not fully tighten fittings yet - leave snug to allow slight adjustment during routing. Ensure all lines clear steering components, exhaust, and suspension through full range of motion.⚠Never force brake line fittings. If fitting does not thread smoothly by hand, stop and inspect for cross-threading or damage. Brake line fittings must seal properly to prevent catastrophic brake failure.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 8Route and secure hard lines along frame railsWorking from front to rear, route each hard line along the frame following factory positions. Install all mounting clips and brackets, ensuring lines are properly seated in clips. Lines must not contact frame directly - use rubber isolators in clips. Verify adequate clearance from exhaust components (minimum 1 inch), driveshaft, suspension arms, and steering linkage. Ensure no sharp bends or kinks. The F-150 frame has pre-drilled holes for line brackets - use these factory locations.Torque specMounting Bolts31 Nm (23 lb-ft)
- 9Install front flexible brake hosesInstall new front flexible brake hoses starting at the frame-end hard line connection. Thread fitting by hand first, then tighten with line wrench. Install hose through frame or suspension bracket with retaining clip or bolt, ensuring hose is not twisted. Connect hose to caliper, ensuring proper positioning - hose should have slight slack and not be stretched or kinked during full steering lock and suspension travel. Replace copper sealing washers at caliper connection.⚠️Flexible hoses must not be twisted during installation. A twisted hose can fail suddenly. Check that any alignment marks or stripes on hose remain straight throughout length.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 10Install rear flexible brake hosesInstall rear flexible brake hoses using same procedure. On RWD F-150, ensure rear hoses have adequate length to accommodate axle movement during suspension compression and extension. Hoses must not stretch tight or contact axle housing, frame, or driveshaft. Route through any axle brackets in factory positions. Replace all sealing washers.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 11Torque all brake line fittingsWorking systematically from master cylinder to wheels, torque all brake line fittings to specification using a torque wrench and line wrench. Do not over-torque as this can damage fittings and cause leaks or line failure. Double-check that all fittings are properly engaged before applying torque. Verify no lines are twisted, kinked, or contacting other components.⚠Use line wrenches, not standard open-end wrenches, for all brake fittings. Standard wrenches will round off fittings causing leaks and dangerous brake failure.Torque specLine Fittings23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 12Bleed brake system - master cylinderFill master cylinder reservoir with fresh Motorcraft DOT 4 LV brake fluid to MAX line. Have an assistant slowly pump brake pedal 15-20 times, then hold pressure. Crack open the master cylinder outlet fitting briefly (1 second) while pedal is held, then close. Pedal will drop. Repeat until no air bubbles emerge. Do this for both outlets. Keep reservoir filled above MIN throughout process. Alternatively, use a pressure bleeder according to manufacturer instructions.⚠️Never allow brake fluid reservoir to run dry during bleeding. This will introduce air into ABS hydraulic unit requiring special scan tool bleeding procedures.
- 13Bleed brake system - wheels (RR, LR, RF, LF sequence)Bleed brakes in this sequence: Right Rear, Left Rear, Right Front, Left Front. At each wheel, attach clear tubing to bleeder screw and submerge other end in clean brake fluid in a container. Have assistant pump brake pedal 3-4 times and hold. Open bleeder screw 1/2 to 3/4 turn until fluid flows, then close before pedal reaches floor. Repeat until fluid flows with no air bubbles. Check reservoir frequently and refill as needed. Torque bleeder screws to specification when complete.⚠Bleeder screws are fragile. Do not over-torque or force. If a bleeder screw breaks, caliper or wheel cylinder replacement will be required.Torque specBleeder Screw10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 14Verify pedal feel and inspect for leaksWith vehicle still on jack stands and wheels off, pump brake pedal firmly multiple times. Pedal should become firm and hold steady pressure. Soft or spongy pedal indicates air in system - rebleed as necessary. Visually inspect every brake line connection, fitting, and joint for leaks. Look for wet spots or drips. Have assistant hold firm pressure on brake pedal while you inspect - some leaks only appear under pressure. Wipe all fittings dry, apply pedal pressure, and recheck.
- 15Install wheels and perform final checksInstall all four wheels and torque lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Lower vehicle to ground. Fill master cylinder reservoir to MAX line with DOT 4 LV fluid and install cap. Pump brake pedal firmly 20-30 times - pedal should be firm with no fade. Start engine (power brakes) and verify pedal height is normal and brakes apply smoothly. Check reservoir level again and top off if needed.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all brake line mounting clips and brackets are fully installed and secure
- Verify no brake lines contact exhaust, driveshaft, suspension, or steering components through full range of motion
- Double-check torque on all brake line fittings and bleeder screws
- Confirm master cylinder reservoir is filled to MAX line with DOT 4 LV fluid
- Verify brake pedal is firm with no sponginess when engine is running
- Check that parking brake functions properly and releases completely
Verification
- With vehicle on level ground and engine running, apply firm brake pedal pressure - pedal should be high and firm with no mushiness or fade
- Visually inspect all brake line connections one final time for any signs of leakage - look for wet spots or drips
- Perform a controlled brake test in a safe area at low speed (under 10 mph) to verify brakes apply evenly without pulling
- Gradually test brakes at higher speeds in a safe area, verifying firm pedal and straight stops with no ABS activation on dry pavement
- After first test drive, recheck all brake line fittings for leaks and verify fluid level in reservoir
- Monitor brake pedal feel for the first 100 miles - any change in pedal feel or warning lights require immediate inspection
- CRITICAL: Do not return to normal driving until you have verified firm pedal feel and even braking performance in controlled conditions
