This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the center link (drag link) on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 RWD with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, connecting the steering gear to the steering linkage.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠Ball joint separators can cause sudden component release. Keep hands and face clear of separation points.
⚠Do not turn the steering wheel with the drag link disconnected as this can damage the steering gear.
ℹ️Mark or measure the position of adjustable tie rod ends before removal to maintain approximate alignment settings.

Parts
- Center link/drag link assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Cotter pins (castle nut size) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Turn steering wheel to center position and do not turn during repair
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at frame rails
- Remove both front wheels
- Spray penetrating oil on all ball joint tapers and castle nuts, allow to soak 10-15 minutes
Procedure
- 1Access the center linkLocate the center link (drag link) running from the steering gear output arm (pitman arm) to the steering linkage. On F-150 models, this connects the steering box or rack to the tie rod assembly. Inspect the dust boots and ball joint condition while accessible.
- 2Remove steering gear end cotter pin and castle nutUsing pliers, straighten and remove the cotter pin from the castle nut at the steering gear end of the center link. Use a 21mm socket to remove the castle nut. Do not reuse the cotter pin.
- 3Separate center link from steering gearInstall a ball joint separator between the steering gear arm and the center link ball stud. Tighten the separator to apply pressure, then strike the steering arm boss with a hammer to shock the taper loose. Remove the separator once the ball stud releases from the taper. Do not pry or damage the dust boot.⚠The center link may drop suddenly when separated. Support the component to prevent injury or damage.
- 4Remove tie rod end cotter pin and nutLocate the opposite end of the center link where it connects to the tie rod or intermediate link. Straighten and remove the cotter pin from the castle nut using pliers. Remove the castle nut with a 19mm socket.
- 5Separate center link from tie rod linkageUse the ball joint separator to apply pressure between the tie rod assembly and the center link ball stud. Strike the linkage boss with a hammer to shock the taper loose. Once separated, remove the center link from the vehicle.
- 6Inspect taper seats and clean mounting surfacesInspect the tapered bores in both the steering gear arm and tie rod linkage for damage, corrosion, or elongation. Use a wire brush to clean the taper seats thoroughly. Any damage to the taper seats requires replacement of the affected component. Inspect the dust boots on the new center link for damage.
- 7Install new center link to steering gearPosition the new center link and insert the ball stud into the steering gear arm taper. Ensure the stud seats fully into the taper. Thread the castle nut onto the ball stud by hand, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Align the castle nut slots with the ball stud hole and install a new cotter pin. Bend the cotter pin ends to secure.Torque specCastle Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 8Connect center link to tie rod linkageInsert the opposite end ball stud into the tie rod or intermediate link taper, ensuring full seating. Thread the castle nut onto the ball stud and tighten to specification. Align the castle nut slots with the cotter pin hole and install a new cotter pin. Bend the cotter pin ends properly to prevent loosening.Torque specCastle Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 9Verify installation and range of motionVerify both ball studs are fully seated in their tapers and all fasteners are tight. Check that the center link has proper clearance throughout its range of motion and does not contact the frame, suspension components, or steering gear housing. Gently move the linkage through its range to confirm freedom of movement.
- 10Reinstall wheels and lower vehicleInstall both front wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle until the tires contact the ground but the suspension is not fully loaded. Torque the wheel lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Fully lower the vehicle and remove jack stands.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts156 Nm (115 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Always use new cotter pins; never reuse old cotter pins as they may fail
- Ensure castle nuts are tightened to specification before aligning cotter pin holes
- Verify all ball joint dust boots are properly seated and not damaged during installation
Verification
- Start the engine and verify power steering operation without unusual noises
- Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to verify smooth operation and no binding
- Test drive the vehicle at low speed in a safe area to confirm proper steering response
- Schedule a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible, as removing the center link will affect toe settings
- After 50-100 miles, re-inspect all fasteners for proper torque and check cotter pins are secure
