This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear engine mount on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠️Ensure the engine is properly supported before removing any engine mount components. Engine shift can cause severe injury or damage.
Allow the engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burn injuries.
Inspect all mount hardware for corrosion. Replace any corroded or damaged bolts.

Parts

  • Rear engine mount assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on a level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  3. Raise vehicle and support securely on jack stands at frame contact points
  4. Remove engine undershield/splash shield if equipped to access rear mount area
  5. Position engine support fixture across engine bay or place transmission jack under transmission pan with wood block to distribute load

Procedure

  1. 1
    Support the engine and transmission
Install engine support fixture with proper adapters on engine lift brackets, or carefully raise transmission jack to just contact the transmission pan with a wood block. Apply slight upward pressure to take weight off the rear mount but do not lift the engine excessively. The engine should be level and stable.
⚠️Verify engine support is secure before proceeding. Engine movement can cause injury or damage to components.
  2. 2
    Remove the mount through bolt
Locate the through bolt that passes horizontally through the rear engine mount assembly connecting the engine bracket to the frame-mounted portion. Apply penetrating lubricant if needed. Remove the nut from the through bolt, then drive or pull the bolt out completely. This may require tapping with a hammer.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connectors if equipped
The rear mount may have active mount actuators or sensors. Locate any electrical connectors on the mount assembly. Press the release tabs and disconnect all electrical connectors. If connectors have mounting bolts, remove them first.
    Torque spec
    Electrical Connector Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove engine mount-to-block bolts
Locate the bolts securing the upper portion of the rear mount to the engine block or transmission bellhousing. These are typically 2-4 bolts accessible from above or below. Remove all bolts securing the mount to the engine/transmission assembly. Support the mount as you remove the last bolt.
  5. 5
    Remove mount-to-frame bolts
Locate the bolts securing the lower portion of the rear mount to the crossmember or subframe. Remove these bolts while supporting the mount assembly. The mount may be heavy and under residual tension.
Support the mount during removal as it may drop suddenly when the last bolt is removed.
  6. 6
Remove the rear engine mount assembly
Carefully maneuver the rear mount assembly out of the mounting area. You may need to slightly adjust engine support height or position to create clearance. Inspect the mounting surfaces on both the engine/transmission and frame for damage, cracks, or elongated bolt holes.
  7. 7
    Clean mounting surfaces
Use a wire brush to clean all mounting surfaces on the engine block/transmission and frame where the new mount will install. Remove any corrosion, old thread locker, or debris. Inspect bolt threads and clean or replace as needed.
  8. 8
    Position the new rear mount
Position the new rear engine mount assembly into place, aligning the mounting holes with the engine/transmission and frame. You may need to adjust engine support height slightly to align all holes properly. Ensure any electrical connectors or hydraulic lines are positioned correctly and not pinched.
  9. 9
    Install mount-to-frame bolts
Install the bolts securing the lower portion of the mount to the frame/crossmember. Start all bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten bolts to specification in a cross pattern.
    Torque spec
    Engine Mount-to-Frame Bolts75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Install engine mount-to-block bolts
Install the bolts securing the upper portion of the mount to the engine block or transmission. Start all bolts by hand, then tighten to specification in a cross pattern.
    Torque spec
    Engine Mount-to-Block Bolts65 Nm (48 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Install the mount through bolt
Insert the through bolt through the mount assembly, ensuring proper alignment of the engine bracket and frame-mounted portion. Install the nut on the through bolt and tighten to specification. This bolt is critical for mount function.
    Torque spec
    Mount Through Bolt101 Nm (75 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect electrical connectors
If the mount has electrical connectors for active mount control or sensors, reconnect them ensuring they click fully into place. Install any electrical connector mounting bolts and tighten to specification. Ensure wiring is properly routed and secured away from heat sources and moving parts.
    Torque spec
    Electrical Connector Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Remove engine support and verify
Carefully remove the engine support fixture or lower the transmission jack, allowing the engine weight to settle onto the new mount. Check that the engine sits level and the mount is properly compressed. Verify all bolts are tight and no components are binding or misaligned.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine undershield/splash shield if removed
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Reconnect negative battery cable
  4. Perform battery initialization procedure if required by vehicle systems

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify no abnormal vibration or movement
  • With engine running, shift through all transmission gears while stationary and verify smooth engagement with no excessive engine movement
  • Perform a test drive and verify no vibration at idle, during acceleration, or deceleration
  • Inspect mount area for any signs of contact between components or unusual movement
  • Check for any diagnostic trouble codes related to active mount system if equipped
