Parts

  • EVAP vent valve × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks at front wheels
  3. Allow exhaust system to cool if vehicle was recently driven
  4. Raise rear of vehicle using appropriate jack points and support with jack stands
  5. Verify vehicle is stable before working underneath

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate EVAP vent valve
The EVAP vent valve is located on the driver side frame rail near the rear axle, mounted to a bracket. It is a cylindrical component with an electrical connector and two hose connections. Use a flashlight to identify the valve location.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull the connector straight off the EVAP vent valve. If the connector is difficult to remove, use a flathead screwdriver to gently release the locking tab while pulling.
  3. 3
Disconnect vapor hose from valve inlet
Locate the vapor hose connected to the inlet side of the vent valve. Press the quick-connect release tabs together using your fingers or needle nose pliers, then pull the hose straight off the valve. Inspect the hose end for damage.
  4. 4
Disconnect fresh air hose from valve outlet
The outlet side connects to the fresh air filter assembly. If equipped with a hose clamp, loosen the clamp using a flathead screwdriver or socket. If equipped with a quick-connect fitting, press the release tabs and pull the hose off. Note the orientation of hoses for installation.

  5. 5
    Remove valve mounting hardware
Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt(s) securing the EVAP vent valve to the mounting bracket on the frame rail. Some models may use a single bolt while others use a bracket assembly. Keep hardware organized for reinstallation.

    Bracket Bolts23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove EVAP vent valve
Once all connections and mounting hardware are removed, pull the EVAP vent valve away from the mounting bracket. Carefully maneuver the valve out from the frame area. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion.
  7. 7
    Install new EVAP vent valve
Position the new EVAP vent valve into the mounting bracket, ensuring proper orientation with the inlet and outlet ports facing the correct directions as noted during removal. Insert and hand-tighten the mounting bolt(s).
  8. 8
    Torque mounting hardware
Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, torque the bracket mounting bolt(s) to specification. Ensure the valve is seated properly in the bracket and does not move when wiggled.

  9. 9
    Reconnect fresh air hose
Push the fresh air hose onto the outlet side of the vent valve until you hear or feel a click if equipped with quick-connect. If using a hose clamp, position the hose fully onto the barbed fitting and tighten the clamp to specification. Verify the connection is secure by pulling on the hose.

    Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect vapor hose
Push the vapor line onto the inlet side of the vent valve until the quick-connect locks into place with an audible click. Pull back on the line to confirm it is properly seated and locked.
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the terminal on the EVAP vent valve and push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secured.
  12. 12
    Lower vehicle
Remove jack stands and carefully lower the vehicle to the ground. Remove wheel chocks.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all hose connections are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify electrical connector is properly secured with locking tab engaged
  3. Double-check all mounting hardware is torqued to specification

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2 minutes, listening for abnormal hissing or vacuum leaks from the rear of the vehicle
  • Use a scan tool to clear any existing EVAP codes and verify no new codes set
  • Perform an EVAP system self-test using a scan tool if available, or drive vehicle through a complete drive cycle
  • Verify no fuel vapor odors are present around the vent valve area
  • Check that the Check Engine Light does not illuminate after several drive cycles
